– Hold Up – Beyonce – This is as good as “XO” – A perfect 21st century pop song taking the indie DNA, the 60s sample, and the sound of the present not mixed but individuated and coming out to your ears, here and now – A

– Finish Line/Drown – In its own way, this is an answer to “Ultralight Beam”, a joyful praise the Lord with some of the same players (Kirk Franklin) and a hopeful masterful from the Boy Who Lived. Absolutely brilliant, maybe the second best song of the year. Everything you can dream of in a song coalesced together – A

– Ultralight Beam – Kanye West – Stranger than “Finish Line/Drown” it comes from a similar place and goes to a different place, a shout out the devil masterstroke. This is what people consider hype? How? – A

– Sorry – Beyonce – In which Bey introduces Becky with the straight hair and the middle finger up – A

– Same Drugs – Chance The Rapper – Not as overwhelmed by God as some of the other tracks, it is just a perfect metaphor for the end of the friendship, “window closed, Wendy got old…” wow… – A

– All We Got – Chance The Rapper – Will somebody say Amen? Lead off track is awesome with a full choir singing harmony and Yeezus guest appearance. “My daughter couldn’t have a better mother, if she ever find another he better love her…” So much for rap and  misogyny  – A

– Freedom – Beyonce – This brings out the best in everyone, a steamroller sound which takes off from 60s guitar and includes a great Kendrick Lamar rap – A

– Real Friends – Kanye West – A nightmare of isolation, it could be Kweezy’s “Fame” – A

– Famous – Kanye West – Rihanna sounds incredible, a beautiful wild thing with classless lyrics – A

– Delirious – Prince – As I work my way through 1999, this was the first one to drive me insane back in the day – A
