This Care2 petition is getting momentum, since this article published in the LA Weekly, it has gained thousands of signatures, but is it really worth it? This is a new petition asking for Coachella headliners Beyonce, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead to donate proceeds to pro-LGBTQ groups, in the light of the accusations toward Phil Anschutz, which were revealed a few weeks ago.

The author of the petition accuses Anschutz, who owns AEG, and basically Goldenvoice and Coachella, ‘to have donated money from these holdings to groups like the Alliance Defending Freedom, the National Christian Foundation and the Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center has called an ‘extremist group.’’

‘He is also not climate-friendly: as the owner of an oil and gas company and once sued an entire town for their anti-fracking policies!’ continues the author.

It doesn’t make any difference if Anschutz has since denied all the accusations in a statement published by Rolling Stone (and other publications), calling the news ‘fake’ and ‘garbage’, the records are here, the Anschutz Foundation donated $10,000 to the Family Research Council in February 2014, a group with a very clear opinion on homosexuality. Sure it was in 2014, and it may be different now, but the LA Weekly points out that recent tax filling from the Anschutz foundation are no more available… so we don’t know what’s going on. Do you want to guess? One thing is sure, Anschutz reacted like someone caught cheating when he declared in Rolling Stone: ‘when it has come to my attention or the attention of the Anschutz Foundation that certain organizations either the Foundation or I have funded have been supporting such causes, we have immediately ceased all contributions to such groups.’… but what part of ‘Family Research Council believes that homosexual conduct is harmful to the persons who engage in it and to society at large, and can never be affirmed’ didn’t he understand immediately? It’s written on the Family Research Council website just like this other sentence about abortion in the women’s health section: ‘Family Research Council believes that abortion, far from empowering women, is a destructive force in women’s lives’

It’s easy to see why Anschutz would deny everything and would not release his taxes for last year, after all if a president elect can get away with it…

I have nothing against a petition like this one, I doubt it will lead anywhere like the millions of petitions produced every day, but, in principle, the problem is the omnipresence of Goldenvoice around Los Angeles: they are behind tons of shows I go to, at the Roxy, the El Rey, the Fonda, the Ace Hotel… it’s simple, if it’s not Live Nation, it is AXS, which is the ticket merchant for AEG… so should we ask the same thing for each of the concerts going through the AEG system? I understand why they target Coachella, it’s a big piece of the market, but technically it is the whole system we should petition against.
