Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of June 4th, 2018
With Latin pop having a moment as strong, and with much more crossover appeal, as the 1990s merengue explosion, this weekend there are two nights of top level , multi artists, concerts at Barclays Center. On Friday there is the Soulfrito Urban Latin Music Fest featuring a mash-up between the new wave of hip-hop stars and Latin trap, including Bad Bunny, A Boogie, Jaden Smith, Bryant Myers, PnB Rock, De La Ghetto, and more. On Saturday it’s the 34th New York Salsa Festival with Willie Colón, Oscar D’León, Rey Ruiz, Andy Montañez, Tito Nieves and many more. It should make for a dance crazy evening and between the two an interesting primer on the future and the past.
Monday – Gregory Porter – Sony Hall – The soulful jazz man is always worth watching.
Tuesday – Kelly Willis – The Loft At City Winery – I haven’t been to the Loft yet, it is an intimate room upstairs at City Winery. The 80s country star was terrific when I saw her with her husband Bruce Robison in 2013 (here) and her new album is a goodie, plus I’ve seen some video of her performance and you can color me impressed and blue.
Wednesday – Depeche Mode with Special Guest: Global Spirit Tour – Barclay Center – I caught the tour when it played MSG last year (here) and reported a a brisk, intelligent two hours of mediocre or worse songs.
Thursday – Lou Barlow – The Knitting Factory – The legendary rock god of 1990s grunge with bands like Sebadoh and Dinosaur Jr, is a true original.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday – Adrian Belew – Iridium – The legendary players player rock guitarist of 1970s and 1980s rock is in town so pay your respects.
Thursday – Dru Hill – Sony Hall – The 1990s r&b band are one of the almost greats
Thursday – Pissed Jeans – Rough Trade – While they define never lived up their potential as much as, say, Titus Andronicus, they are still a great live punk rock happening.
Friday – Ry Cooder – Town Hall – The legendary rock god guitarist has a good album just released.
Friday – Wisin & Yandel “Como Antes Tour” – Madison Square Garden – The reggaeton duo have spent the last couple of years on separate projects, so hearing em back together is a big deal.
Friday – Forest Hills Stadium – Belle And Sebastian – I’m no fan but I love opener Perfume Genuis so go for them.
Sunday – Hot 97 Summer Jam – MetLife – I used to go to this show religiously from back when it was at the long departed Continental Arena. Over the years it’s become a bit of a Sunday night horrorshow and I pass. Kendrick is headlining, A$AP Ferg is there as well…
