Black Flag sues FLAG
Everybody calm the fuck down. FLAG is not Black Flag and in this particular case I’m gonna side with SST owner Greg Ginn. Keith Morris and his FLAG show have made the rounds Fun Fun Fun Fest, Riot Fest, FYF Fest..they aren’t Black Flag but they’re using that logo. Step off geezers.
Greg Ginn filed a lawsuit last Friday against former band mates Keith Morris, Dez Cadena, Chuck Dukowski, and Bill Stevenson, who’ve reunited under the FLAG name (and same style font/logo as original Black Flag) Former Black Flag member Henry Rollins is defendant as well and he isn’t doing any reunion bit at all. As a matter of fact Rollins has opted to GROW THE FUCK UP and not try to rekindle his youth as the other has been members have.
According to the Hollywood Reporter:
Ginn claims he and his label, SST Records, exclusively own the rights to the Black Flag name and logo (and “Flag” variation), which FLAG intend to use on tour. He alleges Morris and Rollins (born Henry Garfield) of “lying to the Trademark Office on registrations; using his own label’s record covers to feign as though they’ve been continuing to use Black Flag since 1979, and in an what’s alleged to be an act of ‘outrageous fraud,’ using bootleg SST t-shirts in an attempt to show they’ve been making such products in that time,” the Reporter adds.
The suit says FLAG’s name and logo are “a colorable imitation” that’s “likely to cause confusion, mistake or deception among consumers.”
We need to take a step back. We are not 17 anymore. Ian McKaye is on and on about how the Urban Outfitters $28. Minor Threat T-shirts are legitimate, There are more Joy Division t-shirts on people who have never heard Ian Curtis’ bellow and I, for one, am sick of the throw back nonsense. To have the Flag v Black Flag spat is just stupid. Both sides get on with your lives, check the calendar its no longer ’82.
SST owns Black Flag. That’s it. The dumbass logo belongs to Black Flag. The art that makes the log belongs to SST. Quit milking your youth to pay your retirement.
