Who in their right mind would record “Queen Jane Approximately” and “Ballad Of A thin Man”, look at his watch and say, hey let’s give “Desolation Row” a shot… After the busiest day of his life, he does a couple overdubs the next day, and on the last day of recording polishes off the long one, does a coupla overdubs and two months later, there is Dylan with the Hawks getting to work on Blonde On Blonde.

1. Desolation Row – Takes 1-2 remake (8/02/1965) False start/breakdown. – The arrangement isn’t quite there yet.

2. Desolation Row – Take 3 remake (8/02/1965) Breakdown. – A “no no stop” er

3. Desolation Row – Take 4 remake (8/02/1965) False start. – Nice guitar

4. Desolation Row – Take 5 remake (8/02/1965) Complete. _- Lyric nearly but not there… it becomes clear that when Dylan isn’t happy he adds words that don’t need to be there, not strong words, words like he is thinking aloud.

5. Tombstone Blues – Take 1 (8/03/1965) Complete. Vocal overdub.-Another day, another overdub.

6. Tombstone Blues – Take 2 (8/03/1965) Complete. Vocal overdub.- The strange doings of the studio.

7. Tombstone Blues – Take 3 (8/03/1965) Complete. Vocal overdub. – OK guys, we think he’s got it

8. Desolation Row – Take 1 (8/04/1965) Rehearsal. – Just the intro

9. Desolation Row – Take 2 (8/04/1965) Rehearsal. – Working the into.

10. Desolation Row – Take 1 (8/04/1965) Complete (with insert). -Except no guitar

11. Desolation Row – Take 5 (8/04/1965) Complete master without acoustic guitar overdub. Released on Highway 61 Revisited, 1965. – Ok then

12. Desolation Row – Take 6 (8/04/1965) Guitar overdub. -exactly what it says it is

13. Desolation Row – Take 7 (8/04/1965) Guitar overdub – Just three seconds they wanted to clean up

14. Tombstone Blues – Take 1 (8/04/1965) Harmonica overdub. – harp front and center. I miss Tom Wilson, kinda depressing

15. Medicine Sunday – Take 1 (10/05/1965) Incomplete. – Two months later and it sounds a whole like “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blue” : meets “Temporary Like Achilles” -that’s the hawks.

16. Medicine Sunday – Take 2 (10/05/1965) Incomplete. -Yeah, this still has to be worked on.

17. Jet Pilot – Take 1 (10/05/1965) Released on Biograph, 1985. – What’s this riff for?

18. I Wanna Be Your Lover – (10/05/1965) Rehearsal. – Yers not hers

19. Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? – Take 1 (10/05/1965) Fragment. – Man he worked hard on this song. It is only a minute but it sounds pretty good

20. Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? – Take 2 (10/05/1965) Fragment. – faster. “You want headphones?”
