Still stuck inside of New York with the Nashville Blues Again, Bob Johnston is a steadying influence but in late November 1965, Dylan and the Hawks aren’t getting it done. After flying through Another Side and Highway 61, this is a study in frustration.

“Visions Of Johanna” isn’t working as a rocker, isn’t working as a country song, and isn’t working as country swing. The Hawks are a great band, but it will take Nashville cats three months later to nail. The first three songs are the last three songs on the November 30th session.

The following song is simply not good enough for first tier Zimmy. I loved “Can You  Please Crawl Out My Window”, it is a huge song for me (“oh my’) but a follow up to “Like A Rolling Stone” and “Positively 4th Street”? With “Stone” reaching # 2, “4th Street” # 7, “Crawl” wasn’t strong enough and didn’t get beyond #58. ” That’s not getting the job done.

“She’s Your Lover Now” is the great lost Dylan song, and proof, if needed, that if he had remained dissatisfied with the “Stone”
takes, he might have dumped it. I forget who told me , after “Crawl” stiffed he didn’t want another putdown song. There is no doubt it would have fit incredibly well next to “One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)” or “Most Likely You Go Your Way And I’ll Go Mine”. Best line: “You keep asking for ashtrays, can’t you reach?”

The entire #10 finds Zim chasing his tail. I love it, but I love the Hawks. ANd I am more to listen to the “She’s Your Lover” etymology.
