Bono Thanks Pence For Support Combatting AIDS In Africa
As much as I try, it’s difficult not to criticize Bono every time he does something he probably considers important? Diplomatic? Meaningful? Bono briefly met with Mike Pence on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference, and he thanked the vice president for his past support of AIDS relief in Africa:
‘Twice on the House floor you defended that, Bono told Pence while speaking about the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), signed by George W. Bush into law. ‘That’s how we know you, and we really appreciate that.’
Pence, who was very probably very flattered, replied: ‘It was an extraordinary historic accomplishment and you played a leading role in carrying it forward.’
Love fest, weird bromance, these two seemed to get along very well, so well that Bono called Pence, ‘The second busiest man in America’…
What’s wrong with Bono? ‘That’s how we know you, and we really appreciate that?’ No that’s not how I know Pence, but Bono would probably have thanked Hitler for having passed laws on animal rights or started an anti-tobacco campaign! Can’t he see the big picture? Is he even aware of Pence’s records on HIV/AIDS in his own state?
Bono has to know about Pence’s actions in Indiana, because everybody can do a simple Google research and get the answer right away: Pence is a man who proposed to pray to stop the spread of HIV in Indiana, a man who ‘advocated for diverting taxpayer dollars to so-called conversion therapy’, and this is what you could read on his campaign website:
‘Congress should support the reauthorization of the Ryan White Care Act only after completion of an audit to ensure that federal dollars were no longer being given to organizations that celebrate and encourage the types of behaviors that facilitate the spreading of the HIV virus. Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.’
It’s clear he hasn’t done much for people with AIDS/HIV in his own state, on the contrary he has even probably enabled and exacerbated the first rural HIV outbreak and Bono has to know this.
So either you will think that the U2 frontman is the mastermind of diplomacy, or you will think he is always ready to lick any ass who considers him to have played a leading role in history. I will pick the latest.
