I was reading where The War On Drugs was signed to a major label, imagine my surprise that the most indie of indie bands was not independent anymore though, really, all the indie labels from Blue Note (owned by Universal) to Sub Pop (Warner Brothers owns 49%) are either owned or distributed by the majors. So how about your faves? Let’s see where these stalwarts of alternative worlds are signed…

Algiers – Matador – distributed by ADA owned by Warner’s

Brand New – Procrastinate! Music Traitors – Yes folks, they aare an actual DIY

Car Seat Headrest – Matador – distributed by ADA owned by Warner’s

Cat Power – Matador – distributed by ADA owned by Warner’s

Cat Stevens – Warner Brothers

Father John Misty – Sub Pop (49% owned by Warners)

Fetty Wap – 300 entertainment, a subsidiary of Atlanta owned by… Universal.

Fleet Foxes – Sub Pop (49% owned by Warners)

Foals – Sub Pop (49% owned by Warners)

Gucci Mane – Universal via Atlantic

Julien Baker – Matador – distributed by ADA owned by Warner’s

Justin Bieber – Universal via Republic

Kanye West – Go round and round and end up at Universal via Def Jam.

Miley Cyrus – RCA owned by Sony

Robert Plant – Nonesuch Records – aka Warners

Paul Simon  – Sony

Rae Sremmurd – Universal

Ringo Starr – Universal

Sleater-Kinney – Sub Pop (49% owned by Warners)

Soundgarden – Sub Pop (49% owned by Warners)

The Flaming Lips – Different Records – Distributed by PIAS, a French company who specialize in EDM.

The Wonder Years – Hopeless Records -distributed by Alternative Distribution Alliance which is owned by Warners

U2 – Universal via Island

Queens Of The Stone Age – Matador – distributed by ADA owned by Warner’s

You get the picture… or do you? Atlantic Records (owned by Warner) current roster: Missy Elliott, Coldplay, David Guetta, Bruno Mars, Melanie Martinez, Kelly Clarkson, Charli XCX, Charlie Puth, Kodak Black, Death Cab for Cutie, Ed Sheeran, Flo Rida, Halestorm, In This Moment, James Blunt, Janelle Monáe, Jason Mraz, Marina and the Diamonds, Paramore, Portugal. The Man, Sia, Simple Plan, Shinedown, Skrillex, Weezer, Lil Uzi Vert, K. Michelle, Kehlani, Joyner Lucas, and Wiz Khalifa…

Now you begin to get the picture since Universal is much bigger than Warner, and this is one Warner subsidiary… .
