Cloak and Dagger And The Growlers Six, Two Upcoming Music Festivals In Los Angeles
I have barely recovered from Desert Daze that Los Angeles offers two other music festivals for the next two weekends, as if festival season was never ready to stop in the city of angels.
On October 20th and 21st, there is a new Goth festival in town called Cloak and Dagger, featuring the legendary band The Jesus and Mary Chain as well as TR/ST, Com Truise, Health, but also HO99O9, Mykki Blanco, Steve Moore, Drab Majesty among others on Friday, and KMFDM, She Wants Revenge, Poptone, The Soft Moon, Cold Cave as well as a bunch of bands I have never heard about on Saturday. According to the names I am familiar with, the tone of the fest is dark/post punk with a noise-pop tendency, so expect a lot of black in the attendance… wait a minute, the website even says ‘Must wear black’, so they are taking it very seriously. Located downtown Los Angeles, the schedule of the festival spreads from 6 pm to 2 am, over four stages, two inside the Globe Theater, one inside the Tower theater plus one in a Biergarten,… excuse my German. The Globe and the Tower theaters are old movie palaces on Broadway and their baroque decorations are perfectly suited for a dark music festival. I suspect you will hear a lot of dark shoegaze, moody electronics and cold synths played by men wearing long black trench coats or women with strange makeup, and if you wanted to get an emotional uplift this weekend, I guess you can pick some other show.
Next weekend, on October 28th and 29th, the Growlers, who used to have their own Beach Goth festival at the Observatory, are hosting a new music fest, The Growlers Six. After last year disastrous Beach Goth edition, they have changed the location, and The Growlers Six will be located at the LA Waterfront in San Pedro. It’s also a two-day fest with an amazingly eclectic list of bands, check this out: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, Dan Auerbach, Julian Casablancas + the Voidz, Butthole Surfers, Beth Ditto, Danny Brown, The B-52s, Girl Talk, Bad Brains, Guided By Voices, Fear, Mike Watt & the Secondmen, Alice Glass, Nice As Fuck, Beach Fossils, Tinariwen, Frankie Cosmos, Rostam, Girlpool, The Weirdos, The Warlocks, La Luz, The Regrettes, The Paranoyds… and many more! For the Growlers, to have secured the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Auerbach and Julian Casablancas on the same bill is a big coup, and their previous beach goths looked smaller in comparison. It’s almost like another FYF fest all over again, for Halloween.
