Fuck It Dog, Life’s A Rick

I am going to see FIDLAR in a week at the Regent theater, a big place for the punk band, and I guess it’s gonna be again very rowdy…. So far they have had excellent tastes in covers, among a few others, they did a live killer (and totally FIDLAR-ized) version of Nick Cave’s ‘Red Right Hand’ for Australian radio station triple j, a cool cover of Pulp’s ‘Common People’, and of course they did this very sensible Elliott Smith’s ‘Whatever’… Could I have asked for more? I don’t think so.

However this week, the band released a new cover, and a very strange one! They redid Sheryl Crow’s ‘If It Makes You Happy,’ What? Why would you want to cover Sheryl Crow for God’s sake? Rather playful and cool at the beginning, the song becomes a sort of freak-out ear-splitting noise pop tune, with outbursts of raw and loud screams in the chorus. The funny thing is that they synced their version to the original Sheryl Crow’s video so she seems to be doing this abrasive hyper-saturated yelling, and she has never sounded so bloody crazy. I have nothing against Crow, but this was so 90’s I can’t believe these FIDLAR’s kids even know who she is. The song is actually from her 1996 album, and it was originally a country song that Crow changed into a more rock sound so she could get more exposure, and it peaked at number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. This is a very odd choice for FIDLAR, they are usually more interested by the underground, and this is the strangest cover I have ever heard so far, I wonder,… would Sheryl Crow approve?

One reassuring thing is that a source has confirmed to Consequence of Sound that the members of FIDLAR are currently working on the follow up to their 2013 self-titled debut album. Watch Sheryl Crow with a new sound:
