Jesse Hughes with Jorma Vik and Jennie Vee (Eagles of Death Metal)

Fire the Animal, a band which still wants to rock as if it was 1974, has a residency at one of my neighborhood upscale bars, called Tenant of the Trees, and since Jesse Hughes, as ‘Boots Electric’, was announced as a special guest, why should I stay home on a Monday night? Even if Tuesday morning was a very difficult one, the experience was certainly a crazy one on several levels.

I didn’t know what to expect, but Fire the Animal were lively beasts, with layered rock guitars and a widescreen country rock heart with a few poppier detours. They rocked the small stage with many guitar solos as if it was a stadium show, and they played with conviction and determination till the end. It was too hot to wear leather jackets but they were the sonic idea of it, while transporting the audience to a true-to-the-core rock show. With their multi-harmonies and upbeat sound, they conquered the place, and since there were apparently a lot of fans already in the room, the ambiance got very heated very fast. And When Jesse Hughes jumped on stage during their rendition of Eagles of Death Metal’s ‘I Love You All the Time’ the degrees in the room increased even more. They played a few more buoyant ones, including a classic but always rewarding cover of ‘Jailhouse Rock’… You can’t go further to the roots of Rock ‘n’ roll than this.

After Jesse Hughes’ jump on stage, I thought we were good to go home, after all it was already midnight, and I had the most surreal experience earlier that night. Hughes was hanging out in the courtyard of the classy place, and I had quite a long and lively exchange about everything on earth with the famous rocker. It was so wild that I can’t even translate it into words, but let’s just say that talking to Jesse Hughes is like surfing the internet aboard a rocket with a million facts and events thrown at your face at the speed of light. And you can disagree with about 99% of what someone says and still appreciate the entertainer, right? Especially when the conversation ends with a ‘I forgive you because I am a Christian’ and a warm hug!

After Fire the Animal, everyone inside the club was there for a treat, Jesse Hughes came back on stage with Jorma Vik on drums for a few rocking numbers, and little by little, they were joined by Eden Galindo on guitar, and even Jennie Vee on bass! It was finally almost a complete Eagles of Death Metal lineup minus Dave Catching, and they were all rocking and jamming very hard in front of our eyes, in this tiny room as if they were rehearsing for a big tour. Aren’t they going to open for QOTSA very soon?

They did their Bowie cover ‘Moonage Daydream’ with Galindo (Mr. Hollywood) replacing Catching on this famous guitar solo, and Hughes was his usually crazy Boots Electric character, shaking and screaming, giving 100% of his sweat to save rock ‘n’ roll, while singing ‘I am from Silverlake and I am in a cool band/Don’t you know who I am?’ during their perfectly fitting ‘Silverlake’ song. It looked like a lot of people there were friends with the bands, but many couldn’t believe this impromptu EODM concert at this bar next to our local Trader Joe’s. Till the late hours, the guitars were sharp and loud, and they jammed and spit their bluesy rock sound with the same toughness than Jesse Hughes’ motorcycle spits engine oil on the ground. They came back for an encore, including their Duran Duran cover, ‘Save A Prayer’, a song that they used to raise money against the terrorism after the Bataclan attack, and when they did another song, a blasting rendition of  ‘I Only Want You’, Jesse told us: ‘I never let anyone telling me what to do, except you’.

Monday night at your regular Silverlake bar, in front of a stage of a few feet large, I had a front row ticket for a stadium show, it was like a secret gig for the few lucky ones, and it felt so good.
