You probably know about the famous Viper Room in Los Angeles, the legendary nightclub on the Sunset Strip. Well, there is a documentary in the making, directed by Olivia Barash and entitled ‘Friends of the Viper Room’, and, a Kickstarter campaign has of course been launched by Fallout Entertainment. They have a long way to go to reach their pledge of $35,000 and only 7 days left.

The dark and tiny nightclub – I have been inside several times and it’s quite small, especially the toilets! – was originally opened by Johnny Depp, and has been the place to be on a Saturday night since the 90s, the place where some celebrities like Mick Jagger, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billy Idol, or Iggy Pop would occasionally make a surprise apparition late at night … logical since Depp was one of the exclusive guests at the Rolling Stones intimate show at the Echoplex a few weeks ago. The Viper Room has always been the place where Hollywood stars collide with rock stars, and this reputation was unfortunately tarnished by the tragic passing of River Phoenix at the club doors, in 1993.

According to their Kickstarter page, bands such as Kara’s Flowers (Maroon 5), The Wallflowers, The Pussycat Dolls, Counting Crows, The Black Eyed Peas and others, have started their rise to stardom on the small Viper Room stage. The documentary will present ‘exclusive never before seen footage’ from the archival footage shot at the club, and will show new interviews of movie stars, celebrities and rock’ n’ roll personalities who frequented the club. The list of the planned interviewees is super impressive, just look at it: Adam Duritz and Ben Mize of Counting Crows, Beverly D’Angelo, Billy Idol, Charlie Sheen, Christina Applegate, Chuck E. Weiss, , D.H. Pellligro of Dead Kennedys, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction/Chili Peppers, Dick Rude of Repo Man, Drew Barrymore, George Drakoulias, Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers, Gil Norton, Guns ‘N’ Roses, Harry Dean Stanton, Iggy Pop, Jim Jarmusch, Joe Santiago of The Pixies, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Johnny Depp, Josh Richmond, Kate Moss, Katey Sagal, Keanu Reeves, Keith Morris of The Circle Jerks, Lenny Kravitz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Hayden, Martyn Lenoble of Porno For Pyros, Masters Of Reality, Michael Des Barres, Mick Jagger, Nancy Sinatra, Norman Reedus of The Walking Dead [interviewed]Ö, Oasis, Pete Weiss & Bob Forrest of Thelonious Monster, Rick Rubin, Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots, Simon Le Bon, Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, The Pussycat Dolls, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Wallflowers, Tobey Maguire, Tom Waits, Tommy Stinson of The Replacements.

The documentary will even go back to the nightclub early beginnings in the 40s, then will go through its various incarnations over the years. And to spice things up, there will even be the first ever Viper Room Reunion Concert, organized with the help of many of the great acts who used to play there back in the day! They even ‘guarantee amazing new performances and collaborations that will help celebrate and memorialize this truly special place’,… err I wonder if we will see Mick Jagger again on the stage of a small club sooner than we think!
