Go (feat. H.E.R. & Rapsody) – Alex Da Kid – You think you don’t know Alex da Kid but he had a good run in the early 10s, he was behind the Hayley Williams and B.O.B. song “Airplane” and the Rihanna -Eminem smash “Love the Way you Lie”. This track is by the anonymous new r&b singer and it finds her at her catchiest, a very sweet soul sound – B+

Leave It Alone – Amanda Shires – Back from having a baby, this is a sweet slice of Americana, nothing special but it does the job – B

Blah Blah Blah – Armin van Buuren – Nursery rhyme hook fuels the king of trances latest – B-

Bubblin – Anderson .Paak – Andersen is rich! All the years of hard work have finally paid off and he is celebrating with this charming and catchy ode to having money in the bank – B+

Buzzkill – Ash – The  Irish rockers have been around for over 20 years now and more power to them because compared to what passes for rock in the States today, these guys are strong and flavorful, not great but the real deal – B

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart – Backstreet Boys – Boys II Men on this EDM banger – C+

GOAT – Bella Thorne – This is the 20 year old actress… an outra rap – C+

B*TCH I’M BELLA THORNE – Bella Thorne -On the other hand… this outrageous piece of self determination and arrogance is a slurry, smarty summation of how success smells, she comes across like prime Kesha. The best line? “Let me show my nipples, what I need a shirt for?” Second best line: “I’m only 20 and I’m clean, by the time I’m 23, I’ll probably be the king” – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Taste – Betty Who – Aussie disco chick morphs “Evil Ways” – C+

Bring Your Love Back – Brandon Ray – Bringing soul to country but anemic on melody – C

Fall In Line – Christina Aguilera -Not the thrill of the new that “Accelerate” is but the vocal, with Demi failing to meet Christina’s prowess, is a fun little battle of the belters – B-

Girlfriend (feat. Dâm-Funk) – Christine and the Queens – The post major breakthrough from the talented experimental disco diva, totally manages the follow up – B+

Damn, dis-moi (feat. Dâm-Funk) – Christine and the Queens – Even in French… – B+

Solo (feat. Demi Lovato) – Clean Bandit – Demi is much better on this slice of dance by one of the best, Clean Bandits, who have astonishing instincts for song plus beats and have had for years – B

Hielo – Daddy Yankee – This is reggaetón? Sounds like Latin trap to me – B

Speechless – Dan + Shay – I can’t say I’m crazy about this new country pop that is exploding as the first sea change since bro-Country -this is stinky slow bore – MUST TO AVOID  C-

Crack The Case – Dawes No, I’m not a fan, but when they get their soft and sweet they can fulfil the contract. This ain’t “All Your Favorite Bands” but what is? It is sad and sinking – B+

Living In The Future – Dawes – Hey man, Dawes don’t rock so don’t try – C-

Shown and Told – Devendra Banhart, Joan Of Arc – Haunting little ambient wrist slitter – B-

Ultimatum – Disclosure, Fatoumata Diawara – A terrific return to form (and there is a nine minute version somewhere that must be phenomenal).  The lead singer, a Malian, is terrific, and the beats are not unlike what Paul has been failing to do with his Graceland remixes. A complete tour de force by the DJs and it is only bloody mindedness that has me choosing Bella over this for single of the week – A-

joy. – for KING & COUNTRY – High emotion quotient Christian rock – C-

Let Go – Hillsong Young & Free – At least for King and Country ain’t these stinkers – D+

Dónde Estarás – J Balvin – Off his upcoming new album, this isn’t crossover but if you have a taste for the place where beats and  reggaeton meet find it  – B

Dinero – Jennifer Lopez, DJ Khalid – J Lo at her best on this superfine dance ode to money – B

Bailemos un Blues – Kany Garcia – Lame singer songwriter song – C

Mama (feat. Jadakiss & TXS) – Kodak Black – Jadakiss is a little too distinctive but this meeting of past and present is a pretty song and TXS is new to me but she sounds great on this ode to mothers – B+

Yes Indeed – Lil Baby, Drake – Young Thug pal sounds great and the first verse but Drake is pretty excellent – B+

4 Gold Chains – (feat. Clams Casino) – Lil Peep – What made Lil Peep important is easily discovered here, an implicit melancholia that makes everything he did sound teen angst sad – A-

Curse of the I-5 Corridor – Neko Case – named after the highway and with backing vocals by Mark Lanegan, this six minute single about moving forward in life includes one revelatory line, “I fucked every man that I wanted to be” and while the construction between the song moving forward and a capella breaks, is an original take, it is also obstructionalist – B-

Sangria Wine – Pharrell Williams, Camila Cabello – Mexican sounding Pharrell piece of extended shrugging – C

Paper Man – Ray LaMontagne – Boring Americana you just wanna kick start – C

Ginger – Riton, Kah-Lo – UK DJ offers up an addictive on the beat sing songy winner – B

RING THE ALARM pt.1, pt.2, pt.3 – The Black Eyed Peas – Wil I Am has yet to recover from losing Fergie, this is a rap track in three parts and  none of it works – C

No Pressure – The Kooks – Pretty, laid back – B-

Wonderful Day for the Race – The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – The terrific brass and guitars rush of catchy ska is as good as ever – B

Downtown’s Dead – Sam Hunt – The follow up to “Body Like A Back Road” won’t crossover – C+

Jackie Chan – Tiesto, Dzeko, Preme, Post Malone – Tiesto with a goodie, the acoustic guitar os sweet when it isn’t getting swamped – B

Red Line – Wooden Shjips – If you have to listen to just one psychedelic West Coast beard band, here it is. “This song is about trying to find equanimity as life continuously pulls you in different directions, emotionally and psychically. The bursts of backwards guitar are the sonic representation of that, being pulled out of your normal forward momentum, as the beat goes on,” the band claims and I believe em, they sound like the Beatles if the Beatles made entire songs based around a moment from “Rain” and had a sweeter tune on it – B+
