Fall Out Boy Single Of The Week: 1-12-18 – 1-18-18

Learn How to Watch (feat. Mac Miller & MadeinTYO) – Carnage – Nice mix and match of DJ Carnage’s beefy production and Mac’s self portrait “I’m the same mothafucka, been the same mothafucka/With the mothafuckin’ fame like Suge Knight” – B-

The Champion – Carrie Underwood featuring Ludacris – A Superbowl track of generic pop and a lousy Ludacris verse  – MUST TO AVOID – D

Nervous Young Inhumans (Single Edit) – Car Seat Headrest – Car Seat Headrest are the poster boys for indie rock where the Front Bottoms failed, because they maneuvered themselves with tireless intelligence between the poles of melody and feedback while the Front Bottoms can’t get past past Brian’s whinge. This is the fourth single off their (presumably) upcoming album, and while it might work as a deep album, it is no single – C+

Resurrection Power – Chris Tomlin – In CCM circles Chris is a major player, but this bombastic crap exemplifies everything wrong with Christian rock- D+

Tequila – Dan + Shay – Ho hum heartache country song, though that “tequila, still see ya” is pretty smart – C+

Everybody’s Coming To My House – David Byrne –  co-written with Brian Eno and featuring contributions from TTY, Happa Isaiah Barr, and Sampha… Sampha? I can’t hear him. Still, nice jerky rhythm and positive vibe – B+

IDGAF – Dua Lipa – This should do well by the English- Albanian singer who is bland on stage but can sell a song, including this very catchy pop track – B

Chloraseptic (feat. 2 Chainz & Phresher) – Remix – Eminem – Eminem whines about mumble rap and 2 Chainz steals the sucker from under his nose – B

EL BAÑO – Enrique Iglesias and Bad Bunny – A huge disappointment, this is as static as Latin American pop gets – C+

Broken Heart – Escape the Fate – Sounds like typical emorock, a real dog – C-

Wilson (Expensive Mistakes) – Fall Out Boy – “I’ll stop wearing black when they make a darker color…”? The fifth song off their upcoming album is the first out and out killer, perfect FOB, funny and an emotional mess and catchy so catchy – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Jesse – Frankie Cosmos – Superstar scion (Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates!)  is the real  thing on this singer songwriter number which takes a little while but by mid song makes itself felt – B

Capital Letters (x BloodPop®) – Hailee Steinfeld – I knew BloodPop as Blood Diamonds, and preferred him, he has already fucked up a Justin Bieber song and then followed that with a bad Taylor Swift remix. This is terrible feom the undoubtedly atrocious Fifty Shades Darker – C-

This Girl – Hunter Hayes – Hunter is such a pussy he should be punched in the nose till he mans up. Still, if we must have a Hayes, this is the one, a soft rock country pop with a pretty good tune – B-

King’s Dead (with Kendrick Lamar & Future) – Jay Rock – And James Blake… it takes awhile but Blakes bridge is excellent and Kendrick’s second verse:

“Fuck integrity, fuck your pedigree, fuck your feelings, fuck your culture
Fuck your mom, fuck your family, fuck your drive
Fuck your land, fuck your children, fuck your wives
Who am I? Not your father, not your brother
Not your reason, not your future
Not your comfort, not your reverence, not your glory
Not your heaven, not your angel, not your spirit
Not your message, not your freedom
Not your people, not your neighbor
Not your baby, not your equal
Not the title y’all want me under”

What can I say? – A-

Respect Commander – Jack White – Takes off around the third minute mark and saves itself – B

After The Storm (feat. Tyler, The Creator & Bootsy Collins) – Kali Uchis – Excellent mix and match pop hop rap track by a terrific singer who needs to release an album sooner than later, Bootsy is a good presence – B

En La Cara – Sua Cara Remix – Major Lazer – A thrilling live EDM reggae band go Latin pop to very good effect -B

Spotlight – Marshmello, Lil Peep – I sincerely doubt this will be the last time we hear from the late Lil Peep but if it is Marshmello does a first rate job on the mix, it is haunting and sad but very alive  – A-

You Worry Me – Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats – I’m not a fan at the best of times and this ain’t the best of times – D+

See Me – Rich Brian – The Indonesian rapper has changed his name from the iffy Rich Chigga to Rich Brian and dropped this state of the art rap quiet song – C+

STREET LIVIN’ – The Black Eyed Peas – Blah, blah, blah Mr. Obvious though that “more niggers in the prison then there ever was slaves” almost saves it – C+

My My My! – Troye Sivan – Nothing special ambient EDM – C

We’re Going Home – Vance Joy – The little girls may understand the appeal of this folkie  with a haircut but I am baffled – C-

Outside Today – YoungBoy Never Broke Again – Soulful backing track and a fine half sung vocal – B-

Sinking Ship – Wild Child – Finger picking lo fi Americana by sister brother act – C+
