Paying Attention – Ashley Monroe – A classicist version of country pop MOR replete with a dramatic string section – B-

Black – Buddy, A$AP Ferg – Catchy hook lined song where Compton native Buddy finds the ultimate tribute and A$AP Ferg underplays skilfully – B+

Dive – Beach House – I’ve had my doubts about Beach House’s ambience and wall of throb dreamscapes but there is no denying this gorgeous song that oozes in the back of your mind like something you had to remember but can’t quite – B+

Pink Lemonade – James Bay – Did you catch him on SNL the other night? Man, this guy looks like the sorta rockstar who should be leading The 1975. He sang this song first and it is like Bryan Ferry sort of uber-romantic rocker and James looks every inch the rock star. Listening to it on record, it isn’t as good but it’ll do – B

Colors – Jason Derulo – Mainster popster has yet to improve on “Trumpets” but, hey, at least the hits keep coming – C+

To The Moon – Kyle – More baby-trap by the Lil Yachty collaborator, terrific sample and catchy catchy hook… plus, a very good singer if not much of a rapper – B-

Billionaire – Lisa Stansfield – The talented r&b long term artist returns with a Lady Gaga soundalike, like when Gaga is being very ballady, say “Million Reasons” – C+

Supercut – El-P Remix – Lorde – Sounds like “Black Star” for some reason – B

El Préstamo – Maluma – A little bland for reggaeton, but I like his voice – C+

Fly – Marshmello, Leah Culver – Ho hum EDM by the mellow one – C

Fine Line – Parker Millsap – Nice little country rocker with a way different beat that jerks the song around – B

Wide Awake – Parquet Courts – Old school disco track with a terrific bassline but it’s not enough so I can go back to shrugging about the boys – C+

This Is It – Scotty McCreery – He sings better than he used to, he doesn’t push it into creepyville any more – C+

bless ur heart – serpentwithfeet – A voice to die for, this is a gorgeous love song as Josiah Wise may find himself just breaking through into the mainstream, it has a subtle hooky power and good vibes for young lovers – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

Morning Is Coming – Sting, Shaggy – Pretty, if ineffectual, straight up no chaser Lover’s Rock . Gregory Isaacs is not doing cartwheels but he isn’t worried either – B-

Never Enough – Stone Temple Pilots – Cool, everything you hate about STP in one place.

Storm – SuRie – The UK’s Eurovision song contest entry -uh oh – C-

Sister Cities – The Wonder Years – Soupy is such a schmuck I can’t take him seriously after that acoustic set at LPR last year… this is loud and fast but overplayed and doesn’t work to his melodic gifts – C

Get The Fuck Off My Dick – Vince Staples – Wow, by Vince’s ain’t run from nothing but the poh-lice vibe this is a pleasant look at all the stuff he owns  thing – B-

Remember Me – Wiley – Grimes best rapper, yes, I would claim better than Stormzy, raps over strings to great effect… all slap and flow as Wiley reclaims his crown – B+

Sanctify – Years & Years – Are they NSYNC yet? Not yet, they are too anonymous – C+
