Wait (Featuring Offset & Vory) – Chantel Jeffries – Chantal is a DJ, the song is a percolating jam about hooking up with your ex – B

The Way I Am – Charlie Puth – The soulful kid is like the Tom Holland of pop, though on this banger he is getting older faster – B

Done For Me (feat. Kehlani) – Charlie Puth – Sex burner, Kehlani sounds terrific on her verse – B

Balenciaga – Cheat Codes – Nice house banger, about a girl and accessorizing – B

Accelerate – Christina Aguilera – It took awhile for this song to reveal itself, but reveal itself it does with this astringent, tangential r&b soulfulness that builds sideways to a gorgeous coda, Ty and 2 Chainz show up as well, and while Christina is underused (which is ridiculous) it doesn’t. Kanye West co-produced and it is a magical piece of pop genius that is not being appreciated because of  all the controversy, and might not have been anyway because nobody hears sound the way West does – SINGLE OF THE WEEK – A-

All To Myself – Dan + Shay – The country meets pop evolution has been troubling (listen to the new Keith Urban if you don’t believe me) but this is a a very good one because it has enough soul to work out of the beats and the guitar solo, with odd flamenco touches, is a biggie – B+

Heaven’s Got A Back Door – Dead Sara – Blues boogie doesn’t live up to its premise though the premise is killer so… C+

MOVE TO MIAMI – Enrique Iglesias, Pitbull – Average banger though with a terrific Latin pop hook -just three notes but it makes the song – B-

Twisted – Ernest K.- Magnificent horn riveted mariachi pop via Nashville with a clickety hook and a future sounding sweetness  – B+

Hunger – Florence + The Machine – I’ve lost interest in her after catching her twice live and finding her hippie vibe an irritant. Though that’s not enough to make me active dislike this soul sub Annie Lennox stuff, the song is – C

No Shame – Future – I see no reason fo a remake of “Super Fly” but I’m getting one anyway, this bore is PARTYNEXTDOOR’s fault though it plays hard against Future’s skills as well – C-

Doesn’t Matter – Gallant – Considered a major force in alt r&b, this is nothing special – C+

Remind Me – Ginny Owens – Christian pop star from Nashville, meh – C

Dreamin’ – Graham Parker – A bland, mid-tempo dog – C

Shadow Of Your Love – Guns N’ Roses – Axl is in great voice and Slash is excellent but the song isn’t major – B

This Party – Houndmouth – Indifferent alt rock saved a little by a good lyric – C+

Breathe – Influence Music – Lousy CCM – MUST TO AVOID – D+

Captured My Heart – Jason Nelson – Gospel blah – C

Motherfuckers – Jauz, Snails – “mother fucker, bad dick”? It’s simple but it says it – B-

I’ll Be There – Jess Glynne – Very Avicii EDM pop, almost works like a memorial – C+

Body Count – Jessie Reyez -This is another strong outing from Reyez, a singer songwriter trope that doubles as a soul outing and an original voice in r&b  – B+

half heart – Jimmy Eat World – Old school emo with a terrific surge towards the end – B

Love Never – Jimmy Eat World – More heads down, no nonsense emo – C+

Jump (featuring Trippie Redd) – Julia Michaels – The first completely ordinary song Julia has released under her own name to date – C+

Another Friend – Kiso -EDM house pop via Chicago – C+

Marinero – Maluma – A little too laid back for my taste, a drear Latin ballad is painful – C

Turnmills – Maribou State – Not bad straight up dance – B-

You Can Cry – Marshmello, Juicy J, James Arthur – Of course Marshmello is a boring bastard, hence the name. And this is a boring song except James sounds like a minor league Sam Smith and Juicy J’s verses work – B-

Jesus Only You – Live – Martin Smith – Or reborn, of course. All crashing waves of sound etc – C-

Baíle de Favela – MORTEN – Pretty good EDM original – C+

SWAY. (The Originals) – Tobe Nwigwe – Strong voiced rapper from Houston, old school in a good way – B

Watch (feat. Lil Uzi Vert & Kanye West) – Travis Scott – Travis in good voice and who doesn’t wanna hear Lil Uzi with Kanye, not the patchwork of his own material, but still a strange odds and ends of sound making a whole – B

ICY GIRL (feat Kehlani) – Bae Mix – Saweeti, Kehlani – Excellent remix for one of the best songs of the year – B+

Youth (feat. Khalid) – Shawn Mendes –  Two good singers add up to one too lo fi for me single – B-

cherubim – serpentwithfeet – Not as good as the sublime “bless your heart” but still a strange Broadway musical meets cossacks track – B+

Genius – with Sia, Diplo & Labrinth – Or LSD,  a terrific supergroup on a hooklined pop track with a lot of dynamism and extended power – B+

Fuck It Off (feat. Chris Brown) – Tee Grizzley – I haven’t been thrilled by the ready for his close up Tee and this changes nothing – C

Sonar – Tim Mason – Nothing much house – C+

Bloom – Troye Sivan – Good looking Aussie and this is a sweet and bland pop craft for girls – C+

Negotiations – Wale – He is a better rapper than I thought, this rap write off is skilful stuff – C

You Don’t Love Me – Wilderado – I saw these guys open for Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie McVie and if your taste runs to guitarcentric classic rock, this is a dynamic piece of surging sound – B-

Real Rich (feat. Gucci Mane) – Wiz Khalifa – The magic touch of Gucci on this untypical trap work that is much better than we are used to from Wiz, and as for Guc? “I don’t fuck broke I got a boujee dick/First round draft, I’ma lottery pick/Pepped up East Atlanta vitamins shit/Solitares glarin,’ big stone like Sharon/Superstar, Ed Sheeran/Bitches love my earrings” – B
