The Glenn Henry Singers

I had already had a taste of the whole Henry and Glenn saga, when there was an exhibit featuring over 100 pieces of original art from the new graphic novel ‘Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever’ at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, about 3 years ago. But the crazy fantasy, that former Black Flag frontman Henry Rollins and former Misfits frontman Glenn Danzig could be a couple, is still very much alive, as the authors of this new tome, ‘Henry & Glenn Forever & Ever: The Completely Ridiculous Edition’ had a release party at Amoeba on Tuesday night. The book is a new hardcover edition of four serialized comics and more never-before-published pages than the previous collective edition! So we will get more of these hilarious cartoons putting the happy crazy-in-love couple in the most awkward situations. In the previous cartoons, satan worshipper Danzig was still very attached to his mother, whereas Rollins was everything you could imagine, a superhero, Frankenstein, a warrior and a lover, while Morrissey, and of course their neighbors Hall and Oates, often crash their place.

This new episode of the so-called ‘greatest love story ever told’ features 20 short stories and adds 16 never-before published pages. Each one of them is filled with plenty of macabre humor, check this out: ‘Digging beneath Glenn’s bricks in the front yard, Henry uncovers Glenn’s mother. Freshly unearthed, she moves in with him and Henry. Glenn’s issues come to the surface as she critiques his art, replaces his wardrobe, scrubs their dungeon, and recalls his childhood.’

And where does this bond between Henry and Glenn come from exactly? We are told that it comes from a common ‘distaste for their own bands’, and these new stories are more proof that love can conquer it all, even the biggest, manliest egos of our time.

There was a book signing by artists Tom Neely and Gin Stevens along with guest artists Megan Hutchison, Coop, Mari Naomi, Keenan Marshall Keller, but before the signing, we were treated by a live set of the Glenn Henry singers. It’s crazy to realize that such a band exists, but it really does and they were quite excellent. Described as the ‘the oldest and most prestigious Misfits Country Western cover band in the greater Los Angeles and high Desert communities’, they effectively covered the Misfits with a country western twist and plenty of guitars and back up vocalists. Their frontman was funny and at ease in his western outfit, and to be honest, I would have never guessed these tunes were Misfits songs, as they truly sounded like outlaw alt-country with a fast tempo… Anyway, the Misfists songs have always been great sing along, and they played ‘Skulls’, ‘Die Die My Darling’, ‘Teenagers from Mars’, ‘Attitude’, and a few others with the same laid-back attitude, tangling guitars and long howls. It was obviously done out of love for Danzig but with a large dose of Johnny Cash badass humor, while totally convincing me that, deep inside, these Misfits songs had true western fibers and country guitar that were waiting to be revealed.

I could have listened to them all night long, as for Henry and Danzig, they obviously became aware of the ongoing joke, but had very different reactions to the comic books. Henry is totally cool with it, although he has admitted to have never opened a copy: ‘I am happy to live the rest of my life never knowing what happens to the two of us in those pages. I am told that in the story, our neighbors are Hall and Oates! If I were to find that anything less than hilarious, then I am in the wrong business, ‘ he said in the LA Weekly. As for Danzig, guess what? He is not very happy about it! The prince of darkness has once declared to Rolling Stone: ‘I didn’t think it was very funny. I thought it was a very crappy, opportunistic book. People are extremely stupid.’ Crappy like your house, which went on sale in Los Angeles Danzig?
