Children Will Listen/You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught – Audra McDonald – The connection here is the sense that at an early age the things kids hear and see will effect them all their lives, the darkness of Sondheim and the Asian racism of Rodgers And Hammerstein comes together as a worried and troubling medley
A Boat To An Island On The Wall – Ben Howard – A fly buzzed electronified beyond relief intro drops you a pitch black world of muttered lyric and teased at monochromatic experimental daymare stuff. This is singer songwriter? Sounds like James Taylor in the middle of electro shock.
3rd Ward Bounce – Big Freedia, Erica Falls – Classic New Orleans bounce is one long party with so much exuberance it moves your body, and I mean even my body, around like a beach ball.
Tiny Baby – Joan Of Arc – More experimental singer songwriter, this time a group project with strange backing track.
Baby Teeth – Juliana Daugherty – A break up song taken from a great remove and it is simple in its guitar and metronome mood though and don’t let its sound hide you from its withering vision, the second guitar is slight yet gorgeous.
Hold My Calls – Nick Cannon – This is as good a new r&b track as I’ve heard all year and a complete shock from a guy I’ve always considered a joke, the “please hold” recording works as a hook and the song has that dark and broody backing tracks we know and love.
