Into The Groovy: Best New Album Tracks 2-9-18 – 2-15-18
PROUD – 2 Chainz, YG, Offset – So now we know, he never wears just one, therefore 2Chainz is, indisputably, da man. Though what makes him the man here is this ode to the matriarch joined in by two top rappers which manages to make women both madonna (momma) and whore (all other women).
Albatross – Alela Diane – The best song off Cusp (of motherhood, of life) is a piano based Carole King-ish tune where Alela steadies herself before entering the next episode of her life, flying 10,000 miles before landing into motherhood.
Bloody Waters (with Anderson .Paak & James Blake) – Ab-Soul – If this was rock it would be art rock with an oriental sounding xylophone from Blake in counter jurisdiction to Paak’s tough vocal and the always interesting Black Hippy… this is the opposite of a Tyga type rapper.
Here as in Heaven (feat. Tasha Cobbs Leonard) – Elevation Collective – Why this CCM and not others? First the first line, “The atmosphere is changing now…” is a keeper, and second it is an atmospheric dreamscape of worship.
God Lifts Up the Lowly – Ezra Furman – This guy is art rick personified singing from a rainbow aesthetic of different perceptions that rattle against societies strictures. Here, a song as good as any on the album, s/he finds its inner power and ends with a Siddur.
Sticky – Ravyn Lenae – Ravyn is become a neo-soul name to conjure and here is why, a completely lovely and addictive song with a glorious vocal about being stuck to the wrong guy, purely addictive, a biggie… and signed to Atlanta who should be capable of breaking her big time.
A Convocation of Fauns (A Faunvocation, If You Will) – The Oh Hellos – 57 seconds of gleeful welcome as folk dreamscape.
Death, Dyin’ and Deviled Eggs – Wade Bowen – Dinner at a wake after a funeral.
