Jam Today: Thursday, August 24th, 2017
Concerts: Tonight is the Mega Summer Concert at Madison Square Garden, with a heady collection of Latin American pop stars, mostly from New York and Puerto Rico. Top names like Don Omar, Fat Joe, Wisin , and Bad Bunny, Bad Bunny is specifically exciting news: he is reggaeton’s Drake and I am very excited to be seeing him. But act for act, if they don’t blow it soundwise, this is a great way to stay on top of Latin pop.
More Concerts: Deep Purple and Alice Cooper on Saturday… at Jones Beach, but the weather is great and rock nyc partner John Pasquale invited me and he hooked us up with VIP which means… an Alice Cooper selfie! I’d like to thank the little people… Next week: Lady Gaga on Monday and then NOTHING till September 8th… that may change though I just took a peek at upcoming concerts and I don’t see how.
Books: I read Rob Sheffield’s “On Bowie” which despite a wobbly start, settled in and while not a biography but a fan’s heartfelt tribute by the Rolling Stone writer who is no stranger to mourning, is astounding. He missed Bowie’s cover of “Pablo Picasso,” and Bowie’s own “Little Wonder” Grade: A. Next? Lizzy Goodman’s “Meet Me In The Bathroom” and then the Hilary Clinton excuseathon.
Fascism Via PG Wodehouse: The trouble with you, Trump, is that just because you have succeeded in inducing a handful of half-wits to disfigure the country by going about in red “Make America Great Again” baseball caps you think you’re someone. You hear them shouting “Heil, Trump!” and you imagine it is the Voice of the People. That is where you make your bloomer. What the Voice of the People is saying is: “Look at that frightful ass Trump swanking about in a baseball cap! Did you ever in your puff see such a perfect perisher?”
New Music: I was going to lead with the upcoming Taylor Swift single, an eight minute extravaganza apparently, meant to be dropping this evening, but I figure I’ll leave it for the review. Needless to add, over here at rock nyc we are wetting ourselves with excitement, but will have to make do with the early streaming of The War On Drugs (here). My fear is not of the album but of the hype… still, the album is first rate. Grade: B+
Old Music: I might get to Presley’s Promised Land later today. Otherwise I’ve been deep into Fat Joe, Bad Bunny and wisin.
Sports: Yanks beat Detroit mais maintenant le deluge… let’s see where we stand next week, right?
