The Coarsening Of Everything Through Reputation: Familiarity Breeds contempt as this winter enters and the spiral continues news isn’t what it used to be. The worst Nor’Easter of the year hit and moved on from nyc leaving behind over a foot and a half of snow but it was the third in less than a month and isn’t even on the New York Times front page, Putin steals an election (and Xi Jinping doesn’t even bother with them), Trump has a “bimbo” eruption every other day, and the US is about to be closed for business for THE THIRD TIME, and it is all old news. Another shooting in a school, another bombing in a different city. And the EDM/Pop/Rap sound rules all before it even as it gets worse. You loved the first Migos album, wait till you get a load of the nearly two hours in length follow up. It is a death spiral of indifference.
Concerts: Justin Timberlake cancelled last nights show, but tonight is on so I am passing on Miranda in order to catch it. My friend John Duffin caught the show in DC and claims it was killer though I will never forgive Timberlake for not performing one of his greatest songs, “Not A Bad Thing” this time round. After that, Weird Al at the Apollo, KD Lang performing Ingenue at Radio City, Billy Joel, Lorde…
More Concerts: Bruce Springsteen just extended his Broadway run through the end of the year, tickets will be released on March 28th for verified friends. I wonder if that will kill the secondary market which has been beyond robust. I wonder if I was the only person hugely disappointed (my review here). I also got a ticket for Sunbeam Flower at Bowery Ballroom, a place I haven’t visited in years (I was meant to go to Peter Perrett earlier this year but it was cancelled when Peter couldn’t get a visa).
New Music: Late in the week though two rappers, Kash Doll and Saweetie, have good EPs with a great song apiece. Add the Christian form of Frank Ocean, Sango, whose new album is masterful.
Old Music: I should finish with Sinatra’s 1956 This is Sinatra today, I am up to a goodie with McCartney, Twin Freaks, and the Impressions all covers album is close by, just waiting for my co-writer to come back from filming a movie.
Sports: Knicks are winning when they should be tanking, the Jets and the Giants can’t find a damn person willing to join the organizations, Mets are the Mets and the Yanks need pitching.
Books: Mark this down, folks: Donna “Teenage Wasteland” Gaines latest book “Why the Ramones Matter (Music Matters)” will be published on October 2nd. But no digital release?
Death: I don’t see how somebody can lose a loved on and not at least be an agnostic. Since you can’t prove a negative they can’t be 100% certain that the person no longer exist and since they can never be proven wrong, guess what? They gain zero from their lack of incredulity.
Television: Maybe it is time to cut the cord, I never watch television on television anymore. Even HBO I prefer to see as part of Amazon Prime. It is spending over $200 a month for virtually nothing at all… but it is like veganism, eating meat is a dated habit and so is watching television.
