Joel Jerome Announces Dios Rebirth, Shares A New Track, ‘Life Between the Tides’
I remember seeing Dios, years and years ago, and I liked them, it was 60’s inspired and their songs were sprawling with Beatles-que sweetness, then the band disappeared out of the Silverlake’s club circulation without any explanation. However, Joel Morales, aka Joel Jerome – actually you have to know that Dios, Dios (malos), Babies on Acid and Joel Jerome are all the same person – got very busy, he kept a low profile but worked with many Los Angeles bands in his Glassell Park studio over the years, serving as sound engineer or even producer for bands like Cherry Glazerr, La Sera, Globelamp, Tashaki Miyaki, and Sarah Negahdari from Happy Hollows, even founding his own label, Psychedelic Thriftstore Recordings.
There was an article about Jerome in the LA Weekly a few years ago, which described him as the ‘behind-the-scene Indie King’, whereas the bands he worked with had nicknamed him ‘Papa Joel’. This father figure even released his own work, a Beck covers album entitled ‘When Beck was cool’ (you have to love the title) in 2011, and ‘Psychedelic Thriftstore Folk’ in 2014. But over the weekend, Joel Jerome announced Dios’ rebirth, as everyone should have expected since it was Easter:
‘ANNOUNCEMENT: hey!!!!!!! soooo……….it being easter an all, i have big news……… DIOS LIVES AGAIN. finishing up a new DIOS album for release this year, here’s the opening track. i hope you enjoy and i CANNOT wait for you to hear the rest of the album. a tour with Grandaddy, AIR and Radiohead are in my sights. talk sooooooon’
And you have it, a new #Diosrebirth website and a new track ‘Life Between the Tides’ sprawling in Pink Floydish psychedelia. It’s a long one – above 8 minutes – with humming vocals and cathartic solo guitars, so if you are feeling nostalgic for this beach romance you had in the 70’s, you can always sign on their email list here. I just hope Joel is not joking about this Grandaddy-Radiohead-Air-Dios world tour!
