Iggy Pop at Punk Rock Bowling in Las Vegas

This is the FYF Fest week, so it is a very busy week, at the condition you are willing to spend that much money for a crowded festival. it’s a 3-day affair this year, and there are still tickets available barely a week away (you can still buy passes here)… So what does it mean?

On Monday 17th, the usual residencies are still going strong with the ukulele circus of Bloody Death Skull at the Echo (and Happy Hollows, Zero DeZire, The Great Sadness, Quazar & The Bamboozled opening), and AOE, described as a left-field r&b/pop duo is playing at the Satellite with Common Souls and Jennah Bell

On Tuesday 18th, Algiers is playing at the Echo, and for having seen this fascinating band once as they opened for Savages last year, I can only recommend them, Sextile and Moon Diagrams are opening

The Delta Riggs are playing at the Hi Hat, and the always soulful Soft White Sixties are opening

And New Wave fans should find plenty of reasons to be happy with the line up at the Greek, ‘Retro Futura is starring Howard Jones, Paul Young, The English Beat, Men Without Hats, Katrina and the Waves, and Modern English.

On Wednesday 19th, Gin Blossoms with Letters to Cleo are playing a free show at the Grove, The Allah-Las are taking over the Cactus Lounge for Desert Nights at the Standard Hollywood and The Sword is playing at the El Rey with Big Jesus & All Souls.

On Thursday 20th, a lot of things are happening everywhere in town, Zola Jesus is playing a free show at the Geffen Contemporary at Moca with Lawrence Rothman, Smerz, DJ Michael Stock. I saw her a couple of years ago, and her dramatic presence over heavy throbbing beats was impressive.

Dream-grunge Psychic Love has a residency at the Satellite with the amazing Pom Poms, Santa Barbara and Omniflux

Legendary Eric Burdon and the Animals are playing a free show during one of Twilight Concert Series at Santa Monica Pier, Mr. Elevator and Rusty’s EAC are opening.

Another punk legend, Dead Kennedys are playing a sold out show at the Echoplex, with Wraths, The GEARS and the Last Internationale opening.

The sensible and amazing Perfume Genius is playing at the El Rey, and even though his new album is not as mesmerizing as his previous one, he is always a must see. Serpentwithfeet is opening.

Third Eye Blind are playing at the Greek with local heroes Silversun Pickups opening (as well as Ocean Park Standoff)

Hollywood Forever Cemetery is having a special night, Planetarium, with Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner (of the National) and James McAlister… this si where you will find me and as Iman calls it ‘The soundtrack to a trip in the center of your consciousness’, I am not sure what to expect.

On Friday 21st, Santoros have a vinyl release party at the Echo with So Many Wizards and Wyatt Blair,… be prepared for a fun party.

On Saturday 22nd, Paul Oakenfold is playing a new Sound in Focus at the Annenberg foundation, Monod Cozmo, Lo Moon are also playing the free show. Everyone’s favorite girl band, the mighty Regrettes are doing a signing at Amoeba Music at 4:30 pm, and tropical Afro/Latin/Funk Jungle Fire is playing a free show at Levitt Pavilion.

But forget anything I have mentioned as the FYF fest is happening on Friday-Saturday-Sunday, three days this year with a very busy line up: Missy Elliott, Bjork, are headlining on Friday, Frank Ocean on Saturday and Nine Inch Nails on Sunday, but there are too many artists playing to be listed here: A Tribe Called Quest, Anderson .Paak, Flying Lotus,  Angel Olsen, Grandaddy, Perfuem Genius,The Drums, The Faint, Blonde Redhead, Slowdive, Nicolas Jaar, Moses Sumney, Whitney, Thee Oh Sees, Erykah Badu, Solange, Run the Jewels, MGMT,…. And many others like the inimitable Iggy Pop on Sunday.
