L.A. BURNING, WEST COAST CONCERT PICKS, JUNE 19TH TO JUNE 25TH 2017
This week, there is a bit of everything, a lot of small shows as usual, but also some huge gigs and the premiere of a music festival in Pasadena.
On Monday June 19th, there is another tempting residency with wiz duo Moon Honey, Wayne Coyne’s friends HOTT MT and doo-wop devil worshipper Twin Temple. I still don’t know if I will have time to check out Send Medicine at the Satellite or The Walcotts at the Bootleg, but they are still there and they are bringing a long list of bands with respectively The Stevenson Ranch Davidians, Wam Dingis, Cuesta Loeb, Natalie Carol (Valley Queen), and Honeyhoney, Ted Russell Kamp, Calico the band, Runson Willis III.
Upset, the band featuring ex-Best Coast Ali Koehler on guitar and ex-Hole Patty Schemel on drums, have a show at the Hi Hat. French vanilla and Shit Giver are opening.
The Drums are doing a signing at Amoeba, I know it’s just a signing, but if you are a fa, it’s your chance to have a moment with Jonny Pierce.
On Tuesday 20th, Palestinian-cause-supporter and Fuck-Trump-provocateur Roger Waters will bring his Pink Floyd show at the Staples Center. He is also playing on the 21st and the 27th at the same place.
At Amoeba, Stephen Dorff will perform songs from the movie Wheeler to celebrate the soundtrack’s vinyl release. The film is the story of an aspiring musician in Nashville and Dorff’s family is deeply connected to country music (his brother Andrew wrote hits for Blake Shelton, Kenny Chesney among others).
Nick Waterhouse will bring his impeccable retro-jazzy music at the Teragram Ballroom with awesome surf-punk-pop-doo-wop Sadgirl for opener.
Steve Earle will perform at Amoeba Music to celebrate his new album ‘So you Wannabe an Outlaw’, which probably says everything about Earle’s music, he is the real deal in country music.
On Thursday June 22nd, the free Twilight Series concert kicks off with Khalid and Bibi Bourelly at the Santa Monica Pier.
The fabulous punk-dance !!! (Chk Chk Chk) will be at the Echoplex for a fun and sweaty night with Honus Honus and Sego
At the Hi Hat, the explosive and never-to-be-called-shoegaze Tennis System is having a show with Kid Bloom and Low Speech
On Friday 23rd, forget all your plans and go see The Black Lips at The Regent Theater, Timmy’s organism and Starcrawler are opening so it’s gonna be an incredible rock night if you can stand the heat!
Rapper Rae Sremmurd is at the Florentines Garden on Hollywood boulevard. I have never stepped a foot in this legendary place – this is where Marilyn used to party I have heard – and I had no idea they were still hosting shows like this one.
On Saturday 24th, Mexican band Kinky will bring their hybrid electro-dance-y music at the Levitt Pavilion.
‘Weirdo Shine’ – that’s the title of their last album – La Luz will be at The Getty for the Off the 405 series
Lael Neale will bring her luminous folk at this new French cafe called Zebulon that I haven’t had the chance to visit yet. Guy Blakeslee’s Entrance and Paz Lenchamtin, who used to play with the Pixies, are also in the lineup.
And Reo Speedwagon and Styx (with Don Felder) will perform another retro-rock night at the Greek theater.
But it is also Arroyo Seco Weekend at The Rose Bowl and with a great lineup headlined by Tom Petty, Alabama Shakes on Saturday and Mumford and Sons and the Shins on Sunday, so it will be a weekend full of music.
On Sunday 25th, French electro-pop and Sofia Coppola’s fav Air will perform at the Greek theater with Lo-Moon.
Seu Jorge is performing The Life Aquatic: A Tribute to David Bowie with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl
But of course, it’s still Arroyo Seco Weekend at the Rose bowl and this is where you will find me!
