See how I did that? I did a little mashup with Taylor Swift, creative, eh?
David Saltzman was recently on 60 Minutes discussing his ‘Robin Hood Project’, a philanthropic organization that does pretty much what you think it would. The organization holds non profit charities accountable and funds them up the wazoo for their efforts. Cool guy, great story but beneath the regular fodder was a nifty music bit about how Bill Clinton tried to reunite Led Zeppelin, if only for just one day.
How nice it would have been to have such legends perform at the 12-12-12 Hurricane Sandy Relief concert? Well here’s how it went down and failed: “There were two bands that we were desperate to recruit,” explains Saltzman. “One was The Rolling Stones, the other was Led Zeppelin. [Film executive] Harvey Weinstein had this great idea that we could enlist Bill Clinton to convince Led Zeppelin to reunite, to perform at the 12-12-12 concert.”
“So, Harvey & I got on a plane and flew down to Washington to meet with President Clinton, who was going to be seeing the members of Led Zeppelin, who were being honored at the Kennedy Center,” he continued. “And, you know, the President was terrific. [He said] ‘I really want to do this; this would be a fantastic thing. I love Led Zeppelin.’ And Bill Clinton himself asked Led Zeppelin to reunite and they wouldn’t do it.”
Well the Rolling Stones are milking their 50th tour like a factory farmed cow and LZ is still doing nothing but firing up false rumors and teasing with odd stops on talk shows for no reason. The 12-12-12 event at Madison Square Garden raised $50 million to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. We were there.
