Live Through This: rock nyc Concert Picks Week Of February 27th, 2017
David Cassidy has had a busy week, first he appeared seriously trashed at a concert, next he told the world he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, and finally announced on twitter that his performance on Saturday at BB Kings will be his final show. “I’m not retiring, I’m just not touring anymore.” If for no reason, this farewell to the great teen idol is a must see. Hopefully he will dig into his masterpiece, 1975’s The Higher They Climb The Harder They Fall.
Tuesday – “Funky Fat Tuesday” Celebration George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic – BB Kings – Clinton won’t be around forever so is always a must see and would be anyway. Since leaving Motown (where he was a session player, when I asked him about it for Creem, Clinton said: “they wanted us to get funky but not too funky”) he has been a force second only to James Brown. And he still gets too funky.
Wednesday – Governors Ball Presents: Dua Lipa – Irving Plaza – The terrific English singer is breaking big this year so catch her now.
Wednesday – Luke Bryan:Kill The Lights Tour 2017 with special guest Brett Eldredge – Madison Square Garden – I don’t love Luke at all but I am still wondering if I should blow off ZZ Top to check out the state of the art of country in person.
Wednesday – ZZ Top – The sharp dressed men in cheap sunglasses are always worth catching.
Thursday – SiriusXM Hits 1 Presents Panic! At The Disco: Death of A Bachelor Tour – a year since we got the album and i am well primed for this one… Mary Rudzis interviewed em for me years ago… Congrats to Saint Motel, who we also interviewed around seven years ago, for the opening slot.
Saturday – Rickie Lee Jones And Madeleine Peyroux – The Town Hall – Not only is Rickie Lee a great songwriter, she’s a delightful woman. A lot to choose from but if you’ve never heard her 1989 Flying Cowboys, you are in for a true treat. Altogether: “Up in the East down in the West, hold on tight to the pony that you love the best.”
