The Carolina Chocolate Drops singer is in the midst of a career high, with this year’s Freedom Highway, a blend of soul and blues and a homegrown Americana (if your home is North Carolina). Among her many gifts, Giddens is a luminous presence and she is closing out the American Songbook series for 2017 at Lincoln Center. In 2013, I singled out Rhiannon’s performance at the Town Hall new folk program as brilliant (here) and she has only improved since then. Saturday will be the first time I’ll have seen her perform a full set and I am very very excited.

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday  – Adrian Belew Power Trio – Iridium – The former Zappa guitarist, stolen by Bowie before setting root with King Crimson, has a new band and he is beyond worth seeing. He is, indeed,  a legendary figure. I wonder why he wasn’t with the united King Crimson?

Wednesday – Father John Misty – this guy ain’t a full shilling and when I saw him at Governors Ball he went from great to rotten (and not back again) with a flick of the switch. I won’t be there… you might.

Thursday – Justin Townes Earle, the Sadies, Sammy Brue – Webster Hall – I’ve seen Justin live many times and he has gotten steadily worse as he descends to schtick over and over again. However, on record he remains perhaps the most consistently gifted songwriter around.

Thursday -Mastodon, Eagles of Death Metal, Russian Circles -Hammerstein Ballroom – I have never been much of a metal boy but Mastadon are among the best of emocore and their new album is worth the price of admission.

Friday – Chrisette Michele – Bb King’s – the Billie Holiday soundalike never broke r&b as big as she should have.

Saturday, Sunday – Frida Payne – I didn’t know but I am not an expert, but Frida is from Detroit and her sister was a Supreme. Of course, I did know “Band of Gold”.

Sunday – Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold, Volbeat – MetLife – I saw Metallica last year at Global Citizen and was very impressed and I have a ticket for this gig… but outdoors on a  Sunday evening? I dunno…
