Live Through This: rock nyc’s Concert Picks 6-5-17 – 6-10-17
Donovan was the Monkees to Bob Dylan’s the Beatles back in the dark ages, and unlike Lennon, Bob Dylan let him know it (remember “Don’t Look Back”), but that was some fifty years and ago and the decades and the years have been exceedingly kind to the UK folksinger. His hippie dreams and nightmare have survived intact, and the one time I saw him at Symphony Space sometime in the 90s, he was fine. On Tuesday, Donovan is performing two sets at The Cutting Room and I cancelled my Sunday Governors Ball to go to see The Weeknd at Prudential on Sunday, sold my Tuesday ticket to see The Weeknd at Barclays and Tuesday and will be there. I might even trip out easy…
Tuesday – Everclear: So Much For The Afterglow 20th Anniversary Tour – Irving Plaza – Art Alexakis only had one album in him and was a jerk when Helen Bach interviewed him for us, but even so the one album he had in him is this one.
Tuesday, Wednesday – The Weeknd – Starboy: Legend of the Fall 2017 World Tour – Barclay Center – I am going tonight and recommend you find some way to make an appearance. The Black Beatles boys will be there as well.
Tuesday – Billy Joel – In Concert – Madison Square Garden – If you haven’t seen him, please ignore the naysayers and make the pilgrimage
Tuesday – Gary U.S. Bonds 9th Annual Birthday Bash – BB Kings – When is a one hit wonder not a one hit wonder? When it’s the “Quarter To Three” r&b maestro.
Wednesday – Iron Maiden – The Book Of Souls Tour 2017 – Barclays Center – Heavy metal bands are like aging hookers, they become respectable. Iron Maiden were more than respectable when I caught em here a coupla years ago.
Wednesday – Skepta – Webster Hall – The crown prince of Grime, he ain’t Stormzy but he ain’t bad.
Thursday – Maxwell “Summers’ Tour ’17” – Prudential Center – The soul brother is deeply eccentric and sometimes quite brilliant. Still, I don’t think his fanbase would mind if he came out of the closet.
Friday – Robert Cray Band – BB Kings – The new album is excellent and I’ve seen him hold his own between Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and BB King, so this is a goodie.
Saturday – The 33rd New York Salsa Festival – Barclay Center – Willie Colon, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Nieves, Grupo Niche, Fruko Y Sus Tesos and more. Impressive, though I remember when Tito Puentes and Celia Cruz were the headliners…
Saturday – The Chainsmokers – Forest Hills Stadium – I saw em at Jingle Ball last year and thought they weren’t ready. Maybe the young pop machine duo are ready now.
Sunday – Hut 97 Summer Jam 2017 – Featuring Chris Brown, Fat Joe, Remy Ma, Migos, and DJ Khaled, so nothing close to an Arena name in the lot. PS: when I caught Wu Tang Clan headline these guys like 20 years ago, Old Dirty Bastard called em the fuck out for never playing the band.
