So finally, a year after we bought the ticket for One Direction’s rock star Harry Styles, reeling a little from his excellent debut album failed to catch fire, and eight months after I caught his excellent Radio City Music Hall gig (here), Harry is spending two sold out nights at MSG. “rock star cool but not just rock star cool, also rockstar kind,” I wrote at the time and while the Radio City Music Hall gig had the joy of exclusivity and the cheapest tickets on Stubhub are going for (wait for it) $11.58, at MSG I’ve got a sense it will be nearly as good this Thursday and Friday.

Monday – Hayley Kiyoko – Expectations North American Tour – Irving Plaza – The coolest lesbian on earth,  so join the girls who like girls for this show.

Tuesday – Imagine Dragons: EVOLVE TOUR – Madison Square Garden – Whatever you think of this classic rock meets fresh beats band, they are very popular.

Wednesday – John Fogerty / ZZ Top: Blues And Bayous Tour – Jones Beach – A nice little line up here, note how Fogerty is on top on this bad moon rising dream line up

Wednesday – Grizzly Bear + Spoon, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith – BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival at Prospect Park Bandshell – The early 00s live with this once a warrior line up.

Wednesday – Maps & Atlases, Prism Tats – Music Hall of Williamsburg – I was disappointed in their new album, but live? Maps & Atlasses are prog jam by other means.

Wednesday – Mike Shinoda – Post Traumatic Album Release Show – Gramercy Theatre – Two days after hearing his new album I am less thrilled but not not thrilled.

Wednesday – Chase Summer Soundtrack with Liam Payne – Beacon Theatre – With Harry at MSG this week, the lesser 1D might not be your second choice (that would be Zayn for sure) but it is the 1D we have.

Wednesday – The Manhattan Transfer, Blue Note Jazz Festival  – Sony Hall – The 70s bubblegum jazz band had some steller songs, “Chanson D’Amour” and “The Boy From New York City” to name but two, so if you haven’t made it to Sony Hall yet maybe now is the time?

Friday – Dropkick Murphys & Flogging Molly, Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers – Forest Hills Stadium – This is as ace a punk rock show as you’ll find in 2018, Jake Burns is the icing.

Friday – Foreigner, Whitesnake, Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Evening – Jones Beach – Not bad 70s metal line up.

Friday – The Monkees present The Mike & Micky Show – Beacon Theatre – Why wasn’t Pete invited along?

Friday – Azealia Banks – Sony Hall – She can’t get out of her own way and has been promising a new album all year, but live she is untouchable…. I saw her in 2015 and this is what I wrote: “A soaring, sweaty mass of superfans at Irving Plaza last night all had the same thing to say: “Pump-parrrrump-pa-rrum-pump” -the ground was moving under our feet, the humidity so bad people were moving on and off the dance floor, the lights a tumble of blinkered sights as she power drove through “Miss Armor”, stopping only to stop a fight, mid-parrump, her long black hair tangled free, her superwoman costume glittering like a signpost on a Tokyo liquor store, everything glistening, tempting, violent, loud but also not at all violent, a sub-cult come together. Azealia Banks at Irving Plaza last night was the most purely adrenaline packed gig I’ve seen since Tyler at T5, there were four fights, one person threw up, arguments as people tried to get in the VIP section (not me… not close), a heat wave, a heavy bi-racial, multi-gender melting pot of youngsters losing their shit and Yung Rapunxel in her element: “I wannnnna be freeeee…” And so she was.”

Saturday – Amen Dunes, U.S. Girls, L’Rain, – Brooklyn Steel – Dunes’ Freedom is better than I gave it credit for, an exceptional singer songwriter effort. But US Girls are something else again, quote possibly the best indie band around.

Saturday – Buster Poindexter – City Winery – Especially hot hot hot during his summer residency.
