Live Through This: rock nyc’s Concert Picks Week Of July 10th, 2017
Beth Ditto, the former Gossip lead singer, current solo artist with a terrific debut album, Fake Sugar, to her name, confines herself to the maybe too small Bowery Ballroom on Friday night for what should be a sold out disco rock blow out party. Four Gossip songs in the setlist, by the way…
Tuesday – 311 with special guests New Politics & The Skints – Hammerstein Ballroom – 311 are a fair to middling band of fair to middling Two Toneing but with tons of energy on stage.
Tuesday – John Mellencamp – Forest Hills – There is something of the po-faced asshole about Mellencamp, he is much more Arlo than Woody, and so self-important you wanna punch him… that’s a recommendation? Well, the one time I saw him I walked out and I am going to make sure I’m right and he sucks.
Tuesday – GRAMMY Salute to Music Legends® – Beacon Theatre – Randy Newman tributing Mo Ostin, Kirk Franklin for Shirley Caesar; and Charlie Wilson for Sly Stone
Tuesday – Strictly Sinatra – A Tribute To Frank Sinatra Starring Michael Dutra – BB Kings – I only saw Frank in person once and as I begin to work my way through his catalog, I wish I’d seen him more…
Wednesday – Echo & The Bunnymen and The Violent Femmes – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – Echo sound like the Doors and the Violent Femmes have one great song, but if you wanna get your early 80s post-punk on so be it.
Wednesday – Jill Scott – Kings Theatre – A soul sister par excellence who could do with better material.
Wednesday – The Moody Blues: Days of Future Passed – 50th Anniversary Tour – If you must see these guys, this is the way to see them.
Friday, Saturday – Taking Back Sunday, Every Time I Die, Modern Chemistry – Leaders of emo still at it.
Friday, Saturday – Ed Sheeran – Mohegan Sun – Really? We don’t get him at Barclays for three months… James Blunt is opening, so call it revenge of the wimps.
Friday – Lady Antebellum: You Look Good Tour 2017 – Jones Beach – The new album is meant to be a return to power but really, it ain’t much… still, I have a soft spot for the country soft rock trio.
Saturday – Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths & Third World – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – This is real deal reggae from a master… actually, from three masters.
Saturday – Popgun Presents Waxahatchee (Album Release Party!) – Warsaw – The poster girl for alt folk indie style will have her new album out the day before.
