Phoebe Nir’s  “Side Hustle” is one of those songs with the theatrical powerdrive of an early Lady Gaga meets Lene Lovich -just right in your face power pop drop drop. When I saw Nir at Bowery Electric last year she added a blistering sexuality to the mix, stealing the show through stealth and then  robbery during an evening overflowing with talent. If she is half as good at The Bitter End Tuesday night, this one is a must see.

Monday – Afghan Whigs – Apollo Theatre – You know, I’ve never seen these guys live, and they are a little over the top for my taste on record at least -live, they have a reputation for delivering the goods.

Tuesday – The Damned 40th Anniversary U.S. Tour – Warsaw – I haven’t seen these guys in decades and vaguely remember interviewing Rat Scabies back in the day… it should be neat, neat, neat.

Tuesday – Michael Ball and Alfie Boe: Together – City Center – UK high culture for middle class shop owners. It should be a very interesting peak into a world of faux operatic twitches.

Wednesday – Old Crow Medicine Show Performing Blonde on Blonde –  The Town Hall – The album was terrific and this ain’t some cover band, they are big time.

Thursday – Billy Joel – In Concert – Madison Square Garden – The songs goes on forever

Friday, Saturday – Whatever your problems are with Nick Cave, I believe he has proven himself too overtly theatrical for the buttons he pushes, one thing is certain: last year’s Skeleton Key was as potent a response to personal tragedy as any artist has ever attempted and succeeded. Live there is never a question. Friday and Saturday at King’s Theatre.

Friday – God Tiny, Stuyedeyed, Ghost King, Greasy Hearts – The Knitting Factory – God Tiny are the best straight up throw down rock band out there right now. If Jeremy Kolker isn’t a rock star why does everyone think he is?

Saturday – Jody Watley & Shalamar Reloaded – First rate disco funk music, Jody has a new EP and even if she didn’t, I bet they kill “Looking For A Love”.

Sunday – The Everly Brothers Experience Presented By The Bird Dogs – BB Kings – This would be soooooo easy to screw up and I don’t know these guys, but if they get it right it is must see… Plus it is followed by Memorial Day…
