Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of December 4th
So, tell me now, are you in fact ready for it? LA Times Mikal Wood wrote that “you wouldn’t say Swift appeared to be having fun exactly — or rather that she was finding much inspiration in Jingle Ball’s businesslike atmosphere”. Hmmm, I’ve been to decades worth of Jingle Balls and the frenetic pace and insanely excited tweens and teens didn’t allow for anything less than a self-fulfilling prophecy of pop supremacy that was anything but businesslike. I left film of Taylor’s performance at the bottom so you can decide for yourself. Me, I wouldn’t miss Friday’s New York Jingle Ball at Ground Zero MSG: Taylor Swift Ed Sheeran, The Chainsmokers, Sam Smith, Halsey. G-Eazy. Fall Out Boy, Demi Lovato, Logic, Charlie Puth, Niall Horan. Camila Cabello, Liam Payne and Julia Michaels. The last time Taylor performed this show was 2014 and she reached her 25th birthday at the stroke of midnight. It was a magical show, and I doubt 2017 will be better but it won’t be much worse. One complaint, we didn’t get Kesha.
Monday – One Night With The Stars – The Theatre At Madison Square Garden – Featuring the ever popular Jordin Sparks and Broadway Queen Betty Buckley, as well as Anthony Rapp, Bruce Vilanch and many others, this is a benefit performance for “Famed hairstylist, Martino Cartier ‘s non-profit Wigs & Wishes charity providing high end wigs and granting once in a lifetime wishes for children battling cancer.”
Monday – Wolf Alice, Polyplastic – Brooklyn Steel – I’m not crazy about these UK indie goes jam cats, and when I saw em at LPR a coupla years ago I thought they were a drag, but they are well hyped…
Monday, Tuesday, – Hallmark Channel Presents Mariah Carey All I Want For Christmas Is You – Beacon Theatre – It was so much fun when I caught it last year (here), like one of the shows that you must see live.
Tuesday – An Evening With David Rawlings – Brooklyn Steel – I bet you anything Gillian Welch shows as well.
Wednesday – Pandora Sounds Like You – Pier 36 – Starring SZA and featuring Post Malone, Ty Dolla $ign, and Cheat Codes, is free with a ticket, and if memory serves they have a curfew there, but if hip hop fans are rioting to get into the Dipsets, this place will be a horrorshow… so you have been warned.
Wednesday – Blue Chips 7000 Tour, Action Bronson, Trash Talk, Meyhem Lauren – The first time I saw this cat I was blown away, fave white rapper bar none for at least three months. Now less so, but we aren’t talking G-Eazy here, this man can rap.
Thursday – K. Michelle – Highline – The powerful r&b star shoots from the hip, maybe a little below, and if this didn’t have a start time of 11pm I might even go.
Saturday, Sunday – Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – MHOW – Go Saturday, Sad13 are opening.
Saturday – The Red Party Presents: Our Holidaze Party – Mercury Lounge – Pawns, DJ Sean Templar (A Murder of Crows NYC Goth & Post-punk Festival), DJ Jarek Zelazny (The Raven), DJ Jose Frances (Dark Dance Radio) – Sounds interesting, right?
Sunday – Perfume Genius, DM Stith – Bowery Ballroom – A top singer songwriter indie phenomenon
Sunday – A John Waters Christmas – City Winery – I miss Divine
