Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of July 4th, 2016
I know you are thinking, with Bob Dylan, and even Noel Gallagher, in town, who the hell would pick Justin Bieber? Bieber is playing the Prudential on Saturday. But there is reason here, I am taking my fourteen year old great-niece to see him and she is a fan and so while I may not be THRILLED -I saw him last tour and thought he was giving Rihanna a run for her money on the indolence and arrogance sweepstakes (a pity because back when I first saw him when he was fifteen, he was a real trooper). But to watch it with his target demo should be very insightful and I am excited at the prospect.
Monday – The Beach Boys w/ special guest John Stamos – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – For July 4th, right? If it was in the afternoon, or in Central Park, I would have gone.
Tuesday – An Evening With Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Beacon Theatre – Just fantastic two years ago at the Beacon, the setlist is too High Flying Birds heavy here but even so, well worth a visit.
Tuesday – Sunday – John Pizzarelli – Jazz Standard – As the years take their toll, John is emerging as the standard bearer for the Great American Songbook…. at two shows a day, that’s twelve shots at seeing the great guitarist.
Wednesday – Friday – Mint Condition – BB Kings – The 80s soul band are still going strong.
Friday – Carlos Vives – The Theatre At Madison Square Garden – The excellent Latin popster, great with a ballad.
Friday – Bob Dylan – Forest Hills Stadium – If you read Helen Bach’s review, you’ve read all the caveats but if you miss him, you have only yourself to blame.
Saturday – The Garth Brooks World Tour Sponsored by GhostTunes – Yankee Stadium – If I could be two places at the same time, one would be here
Saturday – Vans Warped Tour Presented By Journeys – Jones Beach – Headliners are Falling In Reverse, Four Years Strong and Less Than Jake.
Saturday – Maxwell – Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk – I’ve been wondering when I was gonna get to this place, and if I wasn’t busy, the new Maxwell album is so great, this would have been it if I wasn’t seeing the Beib.
Saturday – New Edition & Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmonds – Barclay Center – This is a terrific line-up… just excellent. Pne thing: a pity Bobby Brown isn’t going to be there.
