Live Through This: rock nyc’s Top Concert Picks For The Week Of July 9th, 2018

The last time I saw Radiohead (and I’ve been catching em live since their “Creep” days), I noted how as good as they were there were no alarms and no surprises, it was a very tight and professional outing (my review here). Two years later I am expecting more of the same during their four night (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday -when I am going, and Saturday), with no new product to push, this 23 date push through the US is one part victory lap and two parts filling up the coffers.

Monday – Oh Wonder – SummerStage, Central Park – If all you know is that Lil Uzi Vert sample of “The Way Life Goes,” trust me, there is more where that came from

Wednesday – Andrew Dice Clay – Gramercy Theatre – Remember those nursery rhymes? “Mary had a little lamb, she kept in her backyard, when she took her panties off its woolly dick got hard.” Ooooh, how about this simple but it says it: “Little Boy Blue,
he needed the money”. Happy days.

Wednesday – 2018 XXL Freshman Class Live with Ski Mask The Slump God, Smokepurpp, J.I.D, Stefflon Don, BlocBoy JB, YBN Nahmir, Wifisfuneral, Trippie Redd – Terminal 5 – This line up is so strong I may be forced to enter the confines of the dreaded T5…

Wednesday – GOT7 2018 WORLD TOUR ‘EYES ON YOU’ IN NEW YORK – Barclay Center – Another day, another K-Pop band sells out a US arena. JYP Entertainment, an SK entertainment cartel, are behind these rap and r&b band. If you never seen a K-Pop band, you really should though they never break out of  their pre-packaged essence of modern pop manufacturing,  except an occasional wunderkind like G-Dragon, the result is a little pasteurized.

Thursday – Free Rein Summer Tour 2018: Rebelution, Stephen Marley, Common Kings – Rebelution is Cali Reggae and Stephen Marley isn’t

Thursday –  Gov’t Mule’s Darkside of the Mule + The Avett Brothers – Jones Beach -We still haven’t found a replacement for the Allman Brothers and it sure won’t be Tedeschi Trucks Band, and it isn’t the bluesier Gov’t Mule, though Warren does have better vibes than Butch.

Thursday – The So So Glos – The Harbor Lights – Rocks Off Concert Cruise – These terrific indie rockers haven’t been around for way too long… insist they perform “Fred Astaire”

Friday, Saturday – Kimya Dawson, Daphne – The former Moldy Beach may never get over “Anyone Else But You” but she is a credible folkie.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday – Erasure – World Be Gone Tour – Beacon Theatre – They have a pretty good live album out.

Saturday – Shania Twain: NOW – Barclay Center – The big return album flopped but even so, she’s still the one.

Sunday – The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 20th Anniversary Tour – Lauryn Hill – Jones Beach- Busta Rhymes and MIA are among the opening acts, and Miseducation is a hugely, mammothly, influential album ,but I can’t take her voice or her attitude anymore. Still, if it was at MSG I’d have made the pilgrimage

Sunday – Dennis Quaid And The Sharks – City Winery – I would claim absolutely no fucking way… except, didn’t Dennis play Jerry Lee Lewis on a bio movie? He must have learnt something.
