What is it with New York City and lousy festivals? Why do we get the bottom feeders for the same amount that LA pay. They get beyonce and we get Frank Ocean. I’ve seen Frank live, I caught him at T5 in 2012 (my review here) and I kinda liked him: a generous 18 song set with a coupla covers for taste. Ocean is a talented fellow. So talented that these guys think he can headline East Coast Coachella.
But he can’t really? 300,000 New Yorkers deserve a much better headliner. Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Beyonce or Jay Z, something anything. There is nothing to make it worth the while here, no name to make you think woah, Bruce, Bieber and Beyonce… what a festival.
Friday has Frank and Solange (I saw her at Webster Hall a coupla years ago here… she was ok), Saturday the alt boys are in town Tame Impala and Alt-J, Sunday Nine Inch Nails and A Tribe Called Quest. OK, a lot of fuss and bother without the payoff it deserves. I went VIP last year and it was a waste so this year I presaled GA. Saturday seems specifically iffy, there’s nothing there till Vince Staples. Like Governors Ball, over half the acts nobody has the slightest desire to see. It feels tailor made for arriving around 5 in the afternoon.
