Rapper XXXTentacion Shot Dead At 20
“Rapper” XXXTentacion has been reported dead via gunshot wound by GQ and the Broward County Sheriff’s office via Twitter. At this moment there are no confirmed suspects or any reason.
I’m gonna preface this whole thing by saying that while I was not hoping he would die, I certainly wasn’t on the other side hoping, praying or sharing hashtags so he’d pull through either.
X, born Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, was born and raised in Florida. He was 20 years old. He was a breakout Soundcloud rapper and released music as recently as March of this year. His music certainly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but then again, the Soundcloud rap genre is under heavy scrutiny for being repetitive, boring, uninspired at best and promoting drug use, domestic abuse and violence at worst.
He has been open about his struggles with depression on social media and in his music, with songs about heartbreak (“Fuck Love”) and “depression & obsession” including the line “Depression and obsession don’t mix well, I’m poisoned and my body don’t feel well.”
All that aside, it is important to note that he was currently on trial for criminal charges that include aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, false imprisonment, armed home invasion, robbery and domestic battery by strangulation. In September of last year, he denied these allegations and said in an Instagram video, “Everybody that called me a domestic abuser, I’m going to domestically abuse y’all little sisters’ p*ssy from the back.” He beat his then-girlfriend so badly that she lost part of her vision due to nerve damage and a fracture in her eye and started a GoFundMe, which Onfroy gave $5,000 to. He never showed remorse for what he did to her.
There were upwards of 15 charges against Onfroy, who had been on modified house arrest since December in his comfy $1.4 million home in Parkland, Florida. His past was brought to light with the rise of his popularity, but it only made him more famous.
Onfroy said that he used to beat up kids at school just so that his mother would pay attention to him by yelling at him. He was sent to a residential program for troubled youth and eventually went to juvenile hall on charges of armed robbery, burglary, possession of a firearm, resisting arrest and possession of oxycodone as a sophomore at Piper High School in Sunrise, Florida. Onfroy nearly beat his gay cellmate to death while there, and said to a guard, “If he does anything I disapprove of, I’m gonna kill him.”
To be transparent, as somebody who absolutely hated Onfroy down to the core of his very being, this news has not impacted me in one way or another. I feel entirely neutral about it. I hate guns, and his death is tragic but what I know I will hate in these coming days are the people turning him into a legend of some sort. The kid made frankly terrible music, was a violent criminal and nearly threw his life away until he realized people would pay him for putting forth a face-tattooed image of himself and hoped no one would Google him too hard.
Regardless, a loss of a life so young is tragic, especially when it is violent. No one deserves to get shot in broad daylight a half hour away from the town they grew up in. But that does not mean they should be glorified, nor should we forget the horrific things he did in his short time on earth. Ultimately, it will be interesting to find out who shot him and what the motive was and if it was related to any of the aforementioned. Until then, we wait.
