Comment: When the year turns over, I will publish my reviews of these songs, so this is just an easy opener. The first and most obvious thing is that “One Dance” ain’t here. “Hello” made my chart last year but the charts aren’t very well shown here. No “24 Karat”, no “Heathens”, no “Closer”, no “Side By Side” -I liked all those songs, however they weren’t among the best of my year. From mainstream pop there is maybe 15 songs that might belong there, but only Rae Srmmurd, Bey and The Weeknd were big hit singles. And only Gucci Mane, who shows up three times, dominates. And that’s without me being crazy about the album. Only two anti-Trump songs but I’m hoping for better days next year. Three if you include Swet Shop Boys… though that is a stretch. Of white indie pop, I count five songs. Classic rock, maybe three. Country only shows up once. So the heart of the matter is that like popular music as a whole, there is no center again. They are just great songs, no more and no less: sometimes from great albums, sometimes singles, sometimes from indie poppers that run out of steam. I’d say around half might appear on anybodies list and about half are personal favorites. Neither a good year nor a bad year, the post EDM heralded by Avicii and Calvin Harris has the charts in its sway, and the world is better for it. It is just that the modern pop sound is a little bland, it is OK, we enjoy it, but we don’t obsess over it. One more thing, last year I 600 songs on my list but it seemed too much so here I kept them in order of preference and cut it to, essentially, an “A List” -they area ll great,
