If you are a fan of the late singer-songwriter, rejoice! There’s a new podcast launched by the indie label Kill Rock Star, and it is all about Elliott Smith. The miniseries, simply titled ‘Say Yes: An Elliott Smith Podcast’ will be launched for 6 weeks to coincide with the celebration of the anniversary of Smith’s seminal album ‘Either/Or’, which turns 20 this year. Kill Rock Star is reissuing the album, and has teamed up with Sean Cannon’s The Guestlist to produce six episodes, which will feature in-depth conversations about the album and Smith’s career, stories from people who knew Elliott and memories from artists who were influenced by him.

The first installment is already there and it features a few guests including musician Kevin Devine who almost met Elliott. Kevin is visibly a huge fan and can’t stop praising Elliott and his work, that’s why it is a shame he failed to approach him when he had an occasion, about 6 months before he died. But I know the feeling, it is always overwhelming to meet your idols.

‘There’s a certain air of depressiveness into his work’…’ it’s faithful, thoughtful music’, ‘it evokes a feeling beyond the lyrics’ explains Kevin while describing Elliott’s music very well, with a lot of passion and reverence. ‘He never sacrificed crap for feeling,’ he adds while comparing Elliott Smith to some of the greatest music talents such as Cohen, Dylan, the Beatles. ’He was a generational talent, obscured by the story, the ending’.

In this same episode, Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis remembers about her first exposure to Elliott’s music, she heard ‘Needle in the Hay’, which is featured on the soundtrack of ‘The Royal Tenenbaums’, and she named her guitar Elliott after this. Finally, Jessica Lea Mayfield, who recorded an album of Smith covers with Seth Avett 2 years ago, also contributes to this episode with a few moving thoughts. If this is the same type of in-depth, thoughtful analysis and touching homage we can expect each time, the podcast is a must-listen.

Each Friday will bring another episode, leading up to and including the release date for Either/Or: Expanded Edition on March 10, 2017 The list of confirmed guests sound interesting, with some names far more surprising than others: Jack Black, th Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard, Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant, Anderson Cooper, Regina Spektor, the Strokes’ Albert Hammond Jr., the Flaming Lips, Jesca Hoop, Open Mike Eagle, Lance Bangs, Nada Surf’s Matthew Caws, Pitchfork Senior Editor Jayson Greene, Murder by Death‘s Adam Turla, Moldy Peaches’ Jack Dishel, The Ettes’ Coco Hames, Larry Crane, Regina Spektor, Lucius, David Bazan, Slim Moon, Houndmouth, Aquarium Drunkard’s Jason Woodbury… and others.
