Sexual Assault Accusations Are Shaking The Music World: Is This The End Or Just The Beginning?
It seems that every time I look at the news, there is another sexual assault accusation thrown at my face. In the wake of the Weinstein’s scandal, many women have found the strength to speak up and share their sad experiences, resulting into a very depressing high number of stories inside the music industry. Is there any band safe to like?
The other day, I was mentioning Bjork, who recently wrote a long post on her Facebook page to describe the tumults she had to endure from Danish film director Lars von Trier (although she never named him by his name), as he allegedly sexually harassed her during the making of the movie ‘Dancer in the Dark’.
But there are suddenly so many stories all over the spectrum of the music industry, that I feel overwhelmed…his is what happened in the last few weeks:
Marilyn Manson has just split from his longtime bassist and guitarist Jeordie White, aka Twiggy Ramirez, after the musician was accused of rape by Jessicka Addams, singer of the band Jack Off Jill. This is an old story as she claimed the rape occurred in the early 90s, but as many other women, she had stayed quiet, petrified by shane and fear since it happened.
Montreal musician Alex Calder has been dropped by his label after he acknowledged that an incident, which occurred in 2008, was effectively non consensual and constituted assault… at least he is someone who doesn’t deny the whole thing as all the others, but does it make it better?
LA producer and DJ the Gaslamp Killer has been accused of having raped two women in 2013. He allegedly drugged them at a party at the Standard Hotel in LA and raped them, the good old Bill Cosby way. And despite the fact that William Bensussen (his real name) has denied the story, the Low End Theory, where he often performs, has cut ties with him.
Last month, members of the Polish death metal band Decapitated were accused of kidnap and rape, and the accusers, who were invited on the their tour bus for a drink, had a very similar story than the previous one, except that one of the woman said she was raped by each of the band members… savages!
Rapper Nelly was arrested a few weeks ago for sexually assaulting a woman, although he has been released from custody since.
Crystal Castles has also announced the cancellation of the band’s remaining dates (including a few dates here in California) following the accusation of ex singer Alice Glass against her ex-bandmate Ethan Kath. She claimed he was sexually, physically and mentally abusing her, although he has denied the entire story.
And the last on date is the unexpected story about Matt Mondanile of Real Estate – I don’t know, I have seen them once and they sounded very inoffensive. Mondanile was fired from the band over ‘allegations of unacceptable treatment of women’. These claimed came from multiple women and yesterday musician Julia Holter also posted on her Facebook page a note supporting the allegations, saying that they were in line with what she came to know about him, and that he was so emotionally abusive she had to take a lawyer and was afraid for her life.
Of course, who can forget about the PWR BTTM scandal a few months ago? About the beating endured by Rihanna under Chris Brown’s fist? The Kesha versus Dr. Luke disastrous saga, and the ongoing accusations against rapper R Kelly who has been accused of sexual misconduct toward women for several decades,… and he looks like a very sick man if you believe what his victims’ horrifying declarations.
However, we have passed the Chris-Brown-R-Kelly level, there are new accusations made every day, and the ‘funny’ thing is that all these new accusations are made on Facebook, the favorite social media platform for this new trend. It’s very possible that some of these accusations are false (remember the sad Conor Oberst drama?) especially when they come from fans, but most of them are probably true and I believe all the accusations coming from bandmates. This is the tip of the iceberg, more and more women will be encouraged to talk after so many of them coming forward. According to RAINN, an American is sexually assaulted every 98 seconds, incredibly, there are 321,500 victims of rape and sexual assault each year in the United States, and 1 out 6 women experience sexual violence.
Now it’s up to us to decide which artists we want to continue to support, if a significant percentage of them are rapists, it’s gonna be more and more difficult.
