So Far We Can Listen To 4 Songs From Jack White’s Upcoming Album ‘New Boarding House Reach’
Jack White is about to release a new album with a curious title, ‘Boarding House Reach’, and if I haven’t listened to it yet, there are a few singles (four in total) which have already made their way to YouTube, so I believe we already can a good idea of the tone of this new work by the famous songwriter.
‘Connected By Love’, the opening song of the album, is an electronic gospel-like anthem-wannabe with wobbling organ, back-up voices and an intense and emotional vocal performance by White over images of people at the edge of the apocalypse,… Is that giant orange moon gonna crash on Earth? It may try to have some Black Star flashbacks, but it sounds more like a TV-series parody with a bit too many ‘connected, connected’ for me. And why do I get this ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall puppet rock opera’ vibe every time I listen to it? People will be split on that one, some compares the song to something from Muse, and it sure is a departure from White’s usual bombastic sound.
‘Corporation’ is surprisingly different, a 5-minute jam, working like the very funky and jazzy soundtrack of an wacky thriller movie with bluesy guitars and White’s crazy spoken words ‘Who’s with me?’ It’s a bit experimental, but still old school, and if it is the best he has to offer, I can’t be super happy.
It gets even weirder with the dissonant collage of ‘Over and Over and Over’ with its aggressively piercing guitar à la Tom Morello, although I am not very into the background vocals. It’s probably the most interesting song so far, but will it work? After a few times listening to it, it sounds like a Rage Against the Machine meets the White Stripes with a crazy opera with conga in the background…
‘Respect Commander’ lets the bluesy loud guitar going wild through an out-of-control electronica soundscape, it ends up to be a very bluesy song after a few minutes, but it kind of lets you ask for more, while many people are dropping big names like Led Zepellin, JimiHendrix, Jeff Beck… even Captain Beefheart?
I am just happy ‘Connected By Love’ is not the only song he has released as a single, because that Sam Smith syrup was not my taste, although the other ones are weird, have strange structures and you may hear this feeling a lot in reviews. However, it doesn’t mean this amalgam of sounds won’t work, I just hate the art cover for some bizarre reason.
