Bodhisattva Live – Steely Dan – Dan and Walter’s hit on cult religious moneygrubbing is always great, but this version, which I know from the Citizen Dan Box set (though it was originally the flip side of “Hey Nineteen”, has the best band introduction the world has ever heard. June 1974, Santa Monica, Steely Dan’s somewhat intoxicated truck driver, Jerome Aniton, rolled em in and out:

…Ready For It – Taylor Swift – The Max Martin and Shellack family tree are not doing what needs to be done. Taylor is still Taylor and the chorus is ace, but this is her second Frankenstein monster of a song: it reminds me a little of the “Blank Space – Voice Memo” –it is though Swift had a demo and then all three of them kept on adding stuff; industrial beats, rap, and a Swiftian chorus. The song can’t sustain the conceit. I love it but I don’t think it is great, maybe not even very good, but still… I love taylor, she can do no wrong however hard she tries.
English Tea – Paul McCartney – Off his best album of the 21st Century (not to mention his best tour of the 21st Century, this is the one time he has indisputably nailed a certain twee AA Milne, Woosterish vibe. Oddly, John Lennon, the sort of man who would return his OBE and immigrate to the States, was better at the back garden very Englishness (try “Cry Baby cry” to name but one). Mostly, Macca can’t help winking and blathering, think “Your Mother Should Know”. Here he gets the temperature, the winsome strings and whistles are all mood – A-
It Might As Well Rain Until September – Carole King – Written for Bobby Vee, who buried the masterwork on an album, this is Carole’s original demo and it is just about complete but I mention it to return to the incredible Gerry Goffin, who woke up one day to discover he was the Ike Turner of the Brill building. Goffin can be mentioned in the same breath as Ira Gershwin and is light years ahead of Bernie Taupin. And all you know is that he cheated on Carole King. Whatever – A-
Prologue – Original Broadway Company – A gypsy waltz as a sublime introduction to “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812”. Written after off-Broadway audiences couldn’t follow the plot, it is borderline sarcasm par excellence, the only great song in the entire score, and people still couldn’t follow the plot – A
