Supergroup Filthy Friends To Release An Album In August
Do we need more supergroups? Groups made of bands which are already successful? It is certainly a trend and there is a new one called Filthy Friends, consisting of R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, Sleaher-Kinney’s Corin Tucker, The Minus 5’s Scoth McCaughey, King Crimson’s Bull Rieflin and Fastback’s Kurt Bloch, A nice collection of talent but this is not completely a new story as they had already issued a few tracks like ‘Any Kind of Crowd’ on 2016 Record Store Day, and the anti-Trump song ‘Despierata’. However, they are now planning to release a complete album entitled ‘Invitation’, via Kill Rock Stars and due on August 25th, and they have shared a new song, ‘The Arrival’.
I like the fact that it’s Corin Tucker who leads the game, her signature voice starts up the song and it sounds like another Sleater Kinney track, a bit more classic rock because of all these loud aggressive guitars. The music is definitively driven by a vigorous strength and energy, and it goes right to the essential, but beside Corin’s familiar voice, it’s difficult to hear any influence from R.E.M. or King Crimson.
Tucker also writes the political-charged lyrics, and the band will be raising funds for different causes such as climate change.
‘I’m inspired by all of the states who have committed to the Paris Climate Agreement on their own,’ declared Tucker to Rolling Stone. ‘We need to keep moving on this issue despite the actions of the Trump administration.’ And the band will play at Norway’s Bespoke musik in July to raise awareness about this same subject
The album ‘Invitation’, which is described as a ‘collection that works through a flurry of different moods and styles, genre exercises and joyous experiments’, will feature 12 tracks including the ones previously mentioned and a Roxy Music cover, ‘Editions of You’
They have a bunch of summer dates coming up and I am tempted to go see them at the Teragram in August.
