Billy Joel is spending the rest of his life performing a concert a month at MSG so let’s give it to him.
I’m hoping to keep on at once a year even if I am not crazy about them myself. There is something so New York about this stand, that I love it for only that reason. Long may it last…
“a bill in the State Legislature to name a part of state Route 107 in the Long Island town Oyster Bay after Billy Joel passed in the Senate last week. The bill, which was sponsored by state Senator Jack Martins and Assemblyman Michael Montesano, proposes that the “stretch of South Broadway from East John Street to West Old Country Road” will be called ‘Billy Joel Boulevard’.”
At 65 years old and a year deep into the MSG , Guinness Book of Records heading stand and he might not be the frisky pitbull of old, when he delivers a full, taking the mic stand and singing at the tip of the stage “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” the man is still enthralling
I would love it if Billy performs years of one night concerts, it is such a great idea, he is so good and as we speak I am thinking I’m gonna try and catch him on… THE SECOND SATURDAY IN 2015…
back for another dip after the dastardly deep album New Year’s Eve gig at Barclay’s Center, the ease with which Joel performs to an audience of 20,000 people is a lesson artistic domination through repetition. He has simply done it so many damn times by now, he can do it, that’s all.
If it is nostalgia, it is big shot big time nostalgia, it is nostalgia the way McCartney is nostalgia, but it is more life a masterclass: I think it must be like watching Maria Callas or Louis Armstrong. Who wants to give Armstrong a hard time for playing “Sleepy Time Down South”? To what end?
Let’s pass on the repulsive kiss the throat comment (I mean let’s pass on it now) and let’s assume Presley didn’t make it to the studio (plus: getting permission from Sony for anything Presley related is a bitch, so it probably helps that she records for columbia) , some of this sounds like it might be of interest. Stevie and Babyface to name but two.
if you are going to see Mike Love’s version, don’t expect transcendence, expect old guys thinking young guys songs so old couples can singalong and maybe their kids can join. On July 4th, at Jones Beach, maybe that’s what we want, memories of when we could have fun all summer long instead of working every summer for the past 40 odd years
I love Maria Taylor any way but add one of the best albums of 2013 and her shouting me out as a “real sweet guy” at one of her concerts and I am, needless to say, am putty in her hands. This show at the Knitting Factory on Thursday, with a full band should be excellent as this review off “Lazy-I” would appears to prove
After the Barclay gig I claimed it was gonna be a short MSG run if this is what he plans to present and apparently that was a one off for the uber-fans because at Tampa it was again the soprt of set dreams are made of
people trust him. He does the right thing by them. Before last night you could never imagine him portraying the hubris Springsteen so often does, Joel is too smart, too professional. Yet here he is and there is another track from Songs In The Attic.
Billy Joel will be doing the working and I will be doing the dancing at his Barclay Center New Year’s Eve gig. The first song of the New Year will be going out live on ABC! I wasn’t crazy over his 12-12-12 performance, but he has been on the money way too often for me to give up the chance to spend NYE with him
The last time I saw Billy was at the 12-12-12 gig, and the time before that the closing of Shea Stadium. He was terrific in one and not terrible in another but absolutely the perfect way to take out (or bring in) 2013 – 2014.
