So I say this is great when a simple tune makes you aware of somebody who may have been otherwise forgotten, because Nellie was a totally badass riot grrrl. a true feminist a century before it was trendy, or not!
On Wednesday April 1st, another perfect fit for the place will be celebrated: David Lynch and his music with performances by Duran Duran, Jim James, Karen O, Moby, Angelo Badalamenti, Chrysta Bell, Donovan, Julee Cruise, Kinny Landrum, Rob Mathes, Sky Ferreira, Steven Drozd and Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Tennis, Twin Peaks, Zola Jesus
‘I’m tired of men who aren’t professional or even accomplished musicians continually offering to ‘help me out’ (without being asked), as if i did this by accident and i’m gonna flounder without them. or as if the fact that I’m a woman makes me incapable of using technology.”
Karen O appeared on stage wearing a summery, white and black outfit, and she was radiant… ‘it’s about fucking time’ she said meaning it took her forever to have her show at Amoeba. It is simply called ‘Rapt’ and the tune reveals a real vulnerable side of the usually daring frontwoman, since she is singing it with a fragile, almost husky, voice over a totally stripped-down music arrangement
A new Sia is always good news, a new Manic Street Preachers we’ve been waiting for all year, Clapton taking on the late JJ Cale, Tom Petty hopefully in Southern accents style, Van Dyke Parks (not on Spotify no doubt),. The second week in September is killer: Robert Plant, Loudon Wainwright III, Ryan Adams and Karen O.
Pharrell’s joyous all dancing all smiling, all aboard performance was the best and Idina Menzel’s “Let It Go”, tailor made for the Oscars, a big bland musical theatre pastiche that, not unlike self evident influence “Wicked”, is simply not good enough musically to matter
‘Her’ is nominated for best original song with ‘The Moon Song,’ a collaboration between Karen O and Spike Jonze, and best music (original score) with Arcade Fire’s Win Butler and Owen Pallett’s score. The question is, does any of them even have a chance?
You will have to stay till the end of the credits to hear Arcade Fire’s ‘Supersymmetry’, a song originally composed for the movie but finally reworked for their ‘Reflektor’ album. I must say I was expecting to hear it sooner, but pay attention since instrumental variation of the same song recorded with Owen Pallett, is also featured on the score
