METZ is another band playing at the FYF Fest this year. I have seen them several times but I want to catch them again as their shows are always an empowering experience with the ghost of Nirvana floating above their explosive sound. It is a wild and abrasive thing, earth-shaking, wall-crumbling, playing with dissonance and twisting around distortion. The first track, ‘Acetate’, sounds like Nirvana meets the Pixies in a hairy bath of testosterone. There is so much rage and passion, such fuzz and buzz that ‘Swimmer’ explodes at your face like a Nepal bomb and ‘Spit You Out’ does exactly this… with disdain and fury.

Two of these songs will end up on my very best of the year, Old Fathers “Old Rock N Roll” and Brian Wilson’s “The Last Song”. One of them is the best political song of the year and the other is a go gently into that night and a weathered and true song of aging and loss. The Death Cab track is one of the better numbers, and all the turks, Conor, Lord Huron, Metz, are on their game.
