’50 Years of British Rock History In One Song’
Posts Tagged: One Direction
Eight of these albums are new to the top ten, most of them are lousy, and two of them are guesses because the almost surreally incompetent Billboard, forgot to mention the two repeats
One Direction are finally putting an end to the touring for awhile with one lst lbum to quick the girlies happy and Bieber is gearing up for a year of non-stop touring
This is so much better than the album charts it isn’t even funny. It is so strange after all these years all the fun is on the singles charts, despite movement being minimal week to week (the only new track is “Perfect”), still except for Shawn and Fetty there is nothing I actively dislike here. Congrats to 1D who seem able to override every obstacle in their way. Next week? All adele, all the time.
Perfect – One Direction – They look like the Beatles circa For Sale, a little worn out, and a little drugged out, but they sound about the same, trading off verses to bland out professions of love. The best song off the newbie to my mind, and the hook is clever enough, but when other people write your material it is difficult to grow up – B
“Whether a teenager is writing music, identifying with lyrical and musical themes, or dancing wildly at a live show, the cathartic experience provides a channel for expressing and dealing with a wide range of emotions. A shared love of music gives those in the group a common interest and a basis for friendship, which has many potential emotional benefits (Livestrong, 2013).
The stage was filled with lights, and the stands were filled with smiles!!!! All I did was scream and dance. When we left my legs were killing me, no wonder. Some of the designs on the stage were like doodles, and there were so many lights…it was an amazing balance of creativity and this might be a different point of view, calmness. i thought that some of their songs were calm. When we all started screaming that got them going.
Nothing here thrills me much, it feels like one of the worst summers in immediate memory for singles, albums are OK, as always all over the place but not a terrible year. Still, the singles have had too many weeks like this. Still, congrats to One Direction, who seem cpable of rebounding from anything that is thrown at them.
I really read this one wrong, I’ve had a pretty bad year reading the charts (I thought Demi would be the song of the summer) and I predicted 1D disaster last week and instead they have one of their biggest hits ever, I’d be surprised if it isn’t at the top of the US Charts next week. Plus the fans are as maniacal as ever (hits me as though Zayn was not a fan favorite).
If the Tao of 1D is indeed the fans, the fans were simply rapturous. The screams are still rinigng in my ears and the sight of young girls and their friends forging friendships that will last a life to songs that, well, probably won’t, is good enough a reason to applaud all concerned.
Live: My good friend (and once upon a time rock nyc scribe) Marie Lynn regarding me going to see the boy band at Metlife in a couple of hours: “Somewhere in New York City, a little girl is crying her heart out because you took her ticket to One Direction
Drag Me Down – One Direction – I’d like to drag em down, what the hell is this? 1D should know better than to start album # 5 with this ordinary soul rock piece of product when we want is a nice piece of sugary power pop like “Steal My Girl”. I mean, this is not acceptable – C
Wow, it now costs more to see an IMAX movie than 1D -they aren’t big enough for Stadiums any more. What happens next? The fifth album will tell the story but days when people were paying $500 to see them at Jones Beach appear to be over. I am glad I saw them at their height.
‘It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another different universe,’ he added. ‘And in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction.’
“I feel like I’ve let the fans down but I can’t do this anymore. It is crazy and wild and a bit mad but, at the same time, I’ve never felt more in control in my life. And I feel like I’m doing what’s right – right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good.
Rappers are still going strong even those I haven’t heard anything from for a long time, like Diddy ($60 million and $1.90 per second)! Beside this you have Calvin Harris ($66 million and $2.09 per second), Jay Z ($60 million and $1.90 per second), and Drake ($33 million and $1.05 per second)
Country is hiding in the sidelines, four artists if you include the Eagles, nostalgia buffs rule, eight if you include the Eagles, younger poptarts with seven upstarts (no, don’t include the Eagles) are well attended. Plus two wobblers, Robbie Williams and Michael Buble, just to keep us wondering
Everybody is on Christmas break except Ellen is working on the 22nd and Fallon is working on the 22nd and the 23rd and on the 23rd? The greatest boy band in the world joins Jimmy to bring in Christmas Eve, 2014.
Four is the fourth # 1 by 1D and the last by the old system where Billboard only used sales (Alyson Camus wrote about it here) and it could be worse: sold nearly 400K and a good album. Every 16500 streams equals one album as far as Billboard goes and you can do the math but it comes to $0.015 per stream, Spotify pays $0.06
Scientists have found that music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function, and we don’t know exactly why, but one thing is sure, it has a tremendous effect on women and girls,… we know that since Elvis Presley and Beatlemania, but was that always the case?
Ah, yes, Thanksgivings week, where all the turkeys take the week off and we end with a whole lotta leftovers so what do we want for the guest of the week? I am going with the “drug addict pimps” One Direction who have one very good new album to their name released last week
Now, Tay has reached 2 Million units moved she can await the topple next week when One Direction will take over the top place. In my 1D review earlier this week I claimed 300,000 units would be a hit for the band, it looks like it will be 400K. Plus, Harry is the subject matter of a certain song called “Styles”.
The real question is, will it sell? Will it continue the world domination? It sure should, and if it hits 300K units in the States, consider it a hit. But if it doesn’t, I don’t know how One Direction can improve upon it or turn left or sideways or anything but force Styles to get a haircut.
Hmmm, the new new McCartney tribute album looks major to my untrained ears, Savages are back and with a japanese acid punk band from the UK (giving the word “pardon” whole new vistas of meaning, a new Ariel Pink, a new Bryan Ferry which I’ve heard and I like, and Ariel Pink who has never done it for me but there is a first time for every thing, all possibilities. But I expect the new One Direction to be masterful, the songs I’ve heard have been great and anticipation is sky high
If “Fireproof” had the chance of being a fluke, this second song off the upcoming album Four, is a coming of age for the hottest pop band on earth. with every single modern hook imaginable, from handclaps to guitar licks, to voices raised on elongated choruses and another great tune to boot, this makes em two for two and a classic rock band for a different world – A
One Direction should have been and gone. A manufactured boy band who hit it big and should have disappeared just as fast but are releasing their fourth album this year and if “Fireproof” -their best song since “Kiss You” is anything to go by, are not going to disappear any time soon either.
They don’t have a rehearsed set. In fact, I’m not even sure if they sang over tracks or sang live – but it doesn’t matter for those heart throbs. The girls love them. They are foolish on stage. They are silly boys with plain white t shirts, no plan and bad tattoos. But what matters is the music. The songs. The lyrics. The connection. The emotion
Peruvian law states that possession of marijuana is not punishable if used for personal and immediate consumption in quantities not exceeding eight grams. It also may have soiled their squeaky-clean image, but that was bound to happen. They’re all in their early 20s and this is an absolutely justifiable case of “boys will be boys”.
I saw em at the magical 2012 Jingle Ball and then a year ago at the IZOD Center though I decided to give the Metlife gig this August a miss. If it had been a weekend I might have made it there but it isn’t worth that late at a night.
Between the four of them the only direction this is leading is all the way down to zero. And while pop punk is an OK direction for One Direction I guess, it is still a little irrelevant right? As for Madonna, It has been well over a decade since Madonna met William Orbit and actually created
Unlike Facebook, Twitter is much more spontaneous and you don’t have to be ‘friends’ with anyone to see what they’re saying. Hell all you need is the infamous ‘hashtag’ and you can pretty much bring up everything on any topic.
You are getting sleepy, sleepy, close your eyes and snap you’re asleep. The US Charts are as slow as molasses. It takes a miracle to get in but once you are in you are there for months. Like 12 – 14 weeks they mess around the top 10. Only the surprise(ish) appearance of Katy have kept me awae.
Christmas albums past 12-26 are like fireworks Past November 5th (English reference folks, you can use July 4th if you like), useless, embarrassing, you kinda wonder how you got suck into the entire mess and you don’t wanna even think it till after Thanksgiving.
I’ve listened to Beyonce any number of times, and while it may not all be great, not a song is close to bad. And I’ve listened to One Direction any number of times and if a few songs are good, nothing here is great.
Olly Murs isn’t the only album that thrills me here, the Rebecca Ferguson sophomore effort will please you. She isn’t Emeli Sande but her song selection is very very strong and her voice splendid
Where are the Christmas songs? Only Lily Allen constitutes one and none of the others has hit the top ten yet, where is Susan Boyle, Lucy Spraggan, the Fishwives Choirs (no really) and, er, AC/DC. Cowell is pushing SIX X factor songs, none of which are her.
Where is Helen Bach, who woulda been much meaner than I was? Well, she has resigned from the SNL beat and I don’t really blame her. 1D are good sports but boring boys.
the Garth Brooks Walmart only 6 CD, 2 DVD box set, with four albums of Brooks covers, his greatest hits album from 2007 and a live special that aired on CBS on DVD. Whatever future CDs have, it will be something like this
He only performed two songs but the great vocalese Jon Hendricks, at the age of 92, came onto Van Morrison’s stage at the Theater At Madison Square Garden, and stole the show from under his nose
One Direction have the best selling opening week of 2013 in the UK but the story here is the revenge of the boy band, if you include Elvis (and why wouldn’t you?) that would make six of the top 10, and the entire top fives all boy band redux.
Love Is Love – Hello Steve Reich James Murphy for DFA Remix – David Bowie – Sure, he’s using an idea from Reich, but the way the clapping becomes the beat blows me away every time
If Hopsin was a little better he would be major, when he is in the mood, as he is on this sideswipe at current rappers, he is very aggressively funny.
Utilitarian in the extreme, it is an overbearing drag with lousy lyrics and embarrassing looks under the covers. Of the 18 songs there are maybe 6 goodies and two greaties and that would be more than enough on a reasonably sized album
It was with pride and humility I discovered last night that I had gone over one million entries on google. Yes, folks, we the few, the cute, the famous!! But then a friend told me he was nearly at 3M!!!
September Song – Ella Fitzgerald – Not a great fit, the change in sections clumsy ups the lyric, and I prefer my Ella with a bit more tiskit in her taskit but the voice? You can only surrender to the immaculate perfection of sound and diction – A
The greatest playwright of the 20th century writes a radio play incorporating elements of Dark Side Of The Moon. Voices by the likes of Bill Nighy and Rufus Selwell who act out thought experiments (like the sort you learnt in ethics class back at college, over the album played with most of the vocals removed in celebration of its 40th Anniversary. So where’s “Money”, eh? – B+
I have heard good things about their reworkings of the Everly Brothers songs on the epic Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. Me? I don’t see how on earth the Joe and Jones album can’t suck. So I gave it to 1D
For a pop band, a boy band, a TV reality show band, to maintain it through three albums, well the band have something going on that doesn’t appear to be going on. It seems to be having at the side of your vision. It might be hype but it can’t be all hype.
Though he was so great that time, performing Astral Weeks, performing a “Slim Slow Slider” for the ages that it might very well keep you satiated for years. Just not five years. So his show at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on Monday is more than a giving thanks, it is a benediction. Rumor has it, this may be his farewell tour. You have to hope not.
