I will take James Brown on The One and no melody or I will take Smokey Robinson and melody to die for, but I don’t get either with Frank Ocean (or the Weeknd or Miguel…). Instead I get an excellent falsetto and a good vocal range and an atmospheric mood music so constantly downcast it is like pall upon the songs
The r&b band are used to Arenas, they have opened for the likes of Queen’s Brian May and Bon Jovi, a concept manager Doc McGhee (who was involved with Bon Jovi along with an impressive list of other bands) invented to get maximum exposure along with the Los Angeles four piece maximum r&B.
Vintage Trouble has enjoyed a whirlwind ride that has seen them conquering the UK and Europe with incessant touring, and landing an opening slot on The Who’s Quadrophenia tour in the U.S. Tonight, Thursday, December 6th, you can see Vintage Trouble live on late night TV, when they appear on The Late Show with David Letterman.
Vocally, Frank is great, his range is really wide and his top end glorious, the songs are either great or not great and too much of it drags, but on stage that is much less a problem. The introspect eccentric rock star image is friendlier on stage, and he gave a good performance
Next year Frank Ocean will break big. The r&b soul man is not only a friend of Odd Future (his “She” with Tyler, The Creator, is a single of the year), he has two tracks on Watch The Throne, has two excellent singles and a mixtape floating around and instantaneously sold out two nights at Bowery Ballroom.
