When was the last time I was left speechless after a show? When was the last time I said it was mind blowing? I am not sure…
Sunday lineup included Steve Aoki, The Flaming Lips, Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeros, Deap Vally, Sleigh Bells, Cults, the Black and the White, Surfer Blood, Tennis System and I managed to see most of them. However, once on the field, I realized the organizers had made another big mistake beside not checking the weather, it was Oscars weekend!!
“We got nothin’ better to do, that watch TV and have a coupla brews”, so said Black Flag decades ago. Not so sure that flies these days. Id rather swallo glass some days rather than watch TV. There’s nothing there.
This is the big one, Kanye west being opened for by Kendrick Lamar. Four nights, and I have tix for two, one at Barclay Center and, more importantly, a Saturday night gig at MSG. I’ve seen West twice In the past year, both times, the 12-12-12 gig and closing down Governor’s Ball, have been the sort of gigs you think about for a long time to come
A pretty good week, nothing killed but two very good rap albums and five very good indie bands plus Miley was better than expected and Sleigh Bells worse than hoped but not bad even so
We Need Medicine – The Fratellis – A long time coming but they’ve still got a great lead vocalist – B+
Last time I looked I was interviewing a musician signed to Saddle Creek next week, so let’s send some love to Tim Kasher of Cursive whose last solo album was pretty good. But any week Sleigh Bells release a new album must belong to Sleigh Bells.
Bitter Rivals – Sleigh Bells – The new album is released today and this song leading up proves there is nothing much to worry about: a great synth lick pushes the duo all the way and the sound is filtered through to its focussed doctored vocals and weirdo bridge – B+
