An evening with Andy Summers (of The Police) at The Regent Theater on Saturday
certainly represents what kids listen to these days
On Saturday October 7th, it’s time for Cal Jam 17
I must admit to feeling out of step with modern rock critics (older, younger and inbetween), the problem with his list is its complete indifference to what people actually listen to. Its terrible unpopness.
I was never a fan, it sounded like the usual indie mish mash of Kurt Vile, Cold War Kids, the National, brought to a boil, and I am old enough for this to feel like weak gruel. Plus I didn’t like their name. But this is an excellent song and any way, two of these guys play with the Violators so the Kurt Vile connect makes sense – B+
Spinners – The Hold Steady – For a band I like so much, these guys are sure hit and miss, either it is the same old riff up hook up with speak sing vocals or they nail it down like it is the only song that matters. This is the former except the guitar is tastier than it was, ringing and chiming like never before – B
The episode of “New Girl” featuring Prince was like Pixie and Dixie as they outshone each other in whimsy and twerk and the song itself is one of the worst Prince has put his name to. It is so cutesy you wanna scream and, surely Prince’s calling card, the beat is flat – D+
Let’s forget about Skrillex since I’m far from convinced even if you are certain, and let’s look a little further and study a whole lotta bands with important follow ups: The War On Drugs, The Pretty Reckless, the very buzzy and brilliant Coathangers (even if I wasn’t thrilled by em on stage), TBS, newcomers Perfect Pussy and let’s rest on The Both because it is the new Aimee Mann album and Ted Leo might not be in HER league but he is still in a league.
