The long day continues, but very productive. July 30th, 1965 gave Dylan exactly one song, here he gets three. Two of them are among the greatest songs in his career and while “Ballad Of A Thin Man” isn’t as great, that’s only comparative. Also, the mood at the studio seems less brittle without Tom. Bob is very easy going.
1. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Take 1 (8/02/1965) Breakdown. – Let’s see, we’ve just nailed “Highway 61 Revisited”, what next??? By the way, genius is the switch from “Gravity drops” here to “gravity fails” on the final version.

2. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Take 3 (8/02/1965) Complete. – Too slow and the lyric needs a little fine tuning.

3. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Take 4 (8/02/1965) Rehearsal.- That guitar is lovely.

4. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Take 5 (8/02/1965) Released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7, 2005. Not a bad version, he could’ve got it right here -just needed to speed it up a beat.

5. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Takes 9-10 (8/02/1965) Breakdown. – Totally bollocks it up.

6. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Takes 11-12 (8/02/1965) False starts. – Count in

7. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Take 13 (8/02/1965) Complete.- I’ve heard this so many times now, I’m waiting for the drums to drop, if it does we’re safe.

8. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Takes 14-15 (8/02/1965) False starts. – OK, here we go, the speed is right even though they blow it.

9. Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues – Take 16 (8/02/1965) Released on Highway 61 Revisited, 1965. -GRAVITY FAILS!!!

10. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 1 (8/02/1965) Rehearsal. – Warming up his harp!!!

11. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 2 (8/02/1965) Complete. – The xylophone is a terrible idea.

12. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 3 (8/02/1965) False start. – The organ overwhelms it

13. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 4 (8/02/1965) False start. – They have the piano intro

14. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 5 (8/02/1965) Complete.- Not sure what his problem here is at all, maybe the harp at the end.

15. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 6 (8/02/1965) Complete. He speeds it up and adds the full band to the outro

16. Queen Jane Approximately – Take 7 (8/02/1965) Released on Highway 61 Revisited, 1965. – The right speed, the organ and the piano match up and lest we forget, no more xylophone.

17. Ballad Of A Thin Man – Take 1 (8/02/1965) False start. “This is called ‘The Ballad Of The Thin Man, Part One”

18. Ballad Of A Thin Man – Take 2 (8/02/1965) Breakdown. – Three quarters of the way through as well

19. Ballad Of A Thin Man – Take 3 (8/02/1965) Released on Highway 61 Revisited, 1965. – Wow, that was easy. Notice he kept the chuckle.

20. Ballad Of A Thin Man – Take 4 (8/02/1965) Insert. “Intercut one” -not sure why…
